Wow... What a pitiful set of rules.

"You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free" -- The American President (1995 film)[^]

Love that speech... I know it's a chick flick, but it's still good. Rules like in that link are fine for government and military ceremonies, but I don't think forced patriotism really embodies the spirit of this country. Freedom of expression should apply to the symbols of the country just as it does to everything else. I'd like to see a bunch of T-shirts made with the flag printed on them upside-down, on fire, and covered with graffiti. Why? Not in any sort of protest... Just to show that it can be done. To stretch the limits of the first amendment and show that no matter how insulting the statement, it's still protected by the Bill of Rights. THAT would be something worthy of national pride.

I've watched someone get beaten by rednecks for setting a flag on fire. The flag had fallen to the ground, so he picked it up, folded it and burned it. I personally don't wear a flag, and I try to treat them with respect. I won't get in your face for it though. Like anything else, taken to extremes, patriotism can suck.

If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

Oh, I have nothing against showing respect to the flag... Even though I refuse to say the pledge of allegiance because of the "under god" part, I'll still stand for it. But I still find that link somewhat offensive... My issue with it isn't that there are a list of ways you're supposed to treat the flag... My issue is that they're phrased as rules. The paragraph at the top says each state can choose which parts are enforceable, but the whole document is phrased to suggest that they should all be laws. It shouldn't be, "Follow these rules, or you'll be arrested." (I know it doesn't say that outright, but look at the general tone). It should be saying "This is how you can honor the flag." It should be about manners and etiquette, not rules and laws.

This is stupid!!!! I'm mexican, yes, yes, we (actually they, I wasn't even born) kicked the french asses May 5th when they tried to invade Mexico, but it's only a holiday for schools!!! it's not a mandatory holiday for all, here in the US it's where they made a big deal about it, I don't know who did it. And besides, I'm in the US, should I feel offended because I see american flags around all the time? NO, should I ask the company I work for to give me the american holidays and of course, the mexican holidays, just because it's very sensitive for me to celebrate the mexican revolution... of course NOT. I'm a country with different things I can't demand them to accept my ways, if all the mexican-american don't like it, sorry, but fudge them, the US has customs and ways, why the fudge they want to change it, if they don't like it, they can leave the country and go back to Mexico. what's next? The US celebrating the 4 of July and also September 16th (Mexican independence), because the mexican-american are very senstive about it? send them to Mexico. This one more reason why I support Arizona's law, if they don't like the american way, why even bother to come to the country?... illegals should be prosecuted as criminals (they are criminals) now americans can't show their pride for their country because some stupid mexican-americans (that are supposed to be AMERICANS) are very sensitive about a holiday that in Mexico don't give a shit about it

I want to die like my grandfather- asleep, not like the passengers in his car, screaming!

um, this is a law. Note at least one point has up to a year in jail as a penalty. This is in the US books. It just isn't enforced often because a lot of people realized that the Supreme Court would toss it out faster than a hooker can earn $20 with a virgin. How's that for a kick in the pants?

If that link is accurate, then it's not federal law... Or at least, if it is, that federal law only applies to D.C. It says that it's up to each state to choose if and how to enforce it. Hmm... Maybe I should check New York State law and see how it's dealt with here... I don't get it myself. I'm american, if I was for some reason to wear an american flag and be told something like this I would be more than happy to inform them exactly where they could stuff their offended sense of apparent nationalism as they have no right not to be offended by my simple presence. If they were acting like the kinds of idiots I've seen, or wearing them deliberately to provoke a response like this I could see taking action against them. But if it wasn't organized(or at least they can't prove it) and they were just going about their day, I fail to see the issue. This isn't PC, it's just plain stupid. But you know why they do it? Because of the flag waving idiots who go out of their way to cause conflicts over such things. It's a war of stupid vs stupid and the only people who win are the ones who point and laugh. So far I'm well ahead of things there.

I despise the politics of it, but it drives me nuts that there are people who insist we can't possibly effect it and it's a waste of time to study anything related. How many times have people said humanity couldn't manage something and we prove them wrong? To many for me to be content with the assumption we can't screw ourselves over. But even still, we know changes happen, understanding why they happen and what they'll do is fairly important given we could blow humanity's collective foot off through ignorance. And that goes either way, restricting various growth in fear or blindly charging off with industry/population. If we knew the effects we could figure out what is the right course. But nooo... we get a bunch of political assholes involved who decree it couldn't possibly/has already doomed us. Drives me nuts.

I think it's great to study it, if it's real study,I'm all for basic research. But I wonder why do people think it is the best the way it is? Change is constant, and the Earth has been changing for 4+billion years. How do we know keeping it the same is better than letting it change? That's a lot of either blind fear of change, or hubris.

Don't they shoot people there for uttering the unpatriotic words "Democrat" and "Liberal?" ;)

Well, if you define "better" as "easier for the human race to survive," it becomes a little clearer... If the average temperature were to rise or fall by 100F, we'd all be screwed. If it rises or falls by, say, 2F, we'll probably be just fine. The planet will survive either way, but 2F would be "better" for us than 100F. So, once you nail down the temperature (I'm not saying it's 100F... That was a complete exaggeration), figure out how that change will affect us, and compare that to what we'd have to do to reduce or reverse it, if anything, you can decide what's better or worse. As for those who are against ANY change... I think the issue is that the way things are now, we KNOW what to expect. We know that a certain area will be a good spot to grow fruit, or a good area is unlikely to be wiped out by a hurricane. If the global climate changes, it affects local temperatures and weather patterns, our knowledge is no longer valid... The unknown can scare people.

That's the place. It's also the place where a University president tries to suspend free speech with bullshit claims of terror threats; turns out the real threat was from other right-wing moneybags who threatened to cut the University's funding if a certain individual was allowed to speak. It took a Federal judge to restore sanity. ( Background[^], and the result[^]. ) From a posting by Mr. Evil himself[^] - 'A particularly despicable note came from a man who lives in Cheyenne and is active in a right wing group there; it said, "Maybe someone could take him out and show him the Matthew Sheppard (sic) Commerative (sic) Fence and he could bless it or something." He was referring to Matthew Shepard, the young gay man who was tortured and murdered in 1998, left to die tied to a storm fence outside Laramie.' Let me tell you, we are SOOO happy to be getting out of this fucking backwater... X|

If that link is accurate, then it's not federal law... Or at least, if it is, that federal law only applies to D.C. It says that it's up to each state to choose if and how to enforce it. Hmm... Maybe I should check New York State law and see how it's dealt with here... EDIT: Found some info... http://atheism.about.com/od/flagburningstatelaws/State_Laws_Flag_Burning_Desecration_Commercial_Use_of_American_Flag.htm[^]. Interesting how About.com categorizes it under "Atheism"

Especially when 'Old Glory' contains only earthly symbolism, States and Colonies. Now, burning the Union Flag, with its three crosses, that would be irreligious (as well as unpatriotic).

The makers of Jose Cuervo, Dos Equis, etc, along with the bar owners. Has Hallmark pushed CdM cards? If not, I'm surprised.
