I was sending some files to an accountant. I wrote a reply message but did not attach the files. When I clicked on send, Gmail prompted me:

Did you mean to attach files?

You wrote "Attached are" in your message,
but there are no files attached.
    Send anyway?

It is a small thing but small things such as these still make me continue to use browser based Gmail client vs a full fledged desktop email client.

I like. It is intuitive and sensible. Odd ain't it?

I've had that for a while - although I think it was enabled as a labs feature on mine so might have become standard now...

I doubt it. If it isn't intuitive then we need to fix it. - Chris Maunder

I saw something a few weeks back on either Digg or Slashdot that mentioned that it has been promoted to being a standard feature.

Thunderbird does that too now. Saved me a bit of embarrassment the other day.

That feature used to be in the Gmail Labs but recently that feature got graduated and merged with Gmail.

What's really weird is that I first encountered that message last week in Thunderbird when I'd written the word "attachment" and then again, the very same day, in GMail! Marc

This feature was developed by an intern at Gmail[^]. He had developed it as a labs feature, but now it has been promoted to the standard email too.

Years ago I wrote a desktop email application that we used in-house and I added this exact-same feature. That was in the late 90s. I should of patented it. :)

What's most remarkable is that when developers come up with a tweak that is genuinely useful for customers and users, we're all surprised.
