The company I use for hosting one of my sites gives very detailed statistics about my site, eg. Who visited, what OS was used, what browser was used etc. I had quite a surprise when I saw these on the list browsers that have viewed the site:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 127 visits
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 13 visits
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 12 visits
Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 34 visitsAlso, the OS's that have viewed the site are equally as suprising
Windows 95 89 visits
Windows 98 32 visits
Windows 3.xx 50 visitsI had no idea any of these old browsers/OS's were still used so much. I mean come on, 34 visits from IE 2.0? I'm surprised there's 34 people who can even remember what that looks like! :rolleyes:

Moose.1. When were these hits recorded? Last week? Last 6 months? Last 10 years? 2. It's pretty easy to change a browser's identification. While I can't think of any good reason to claim your browser is IE 2.0, it's doable.

Apparently, this month. Well I did think it could be someone changing the browser identification, but as you said, I can't think of a reason why they would.

By modifying the Browser Agent String. This website shows you what information the browser sent to the web server about your computer (eg. OS, Browser): http://show-ip.net/useragent/[^] Edit: (I got rid of the words which didn't make sense ;P

Moose.Funny, I am redesigning my site and I am not supporting IE at all. They still can't even manage to render PNG's correctly. While the new site will otherwise look OK in IE8 the list's don't work in IE7, and well IE6 is even worse. It just takes too much time to support IE at all. Besides most of the small business owners who I meet use Firefox anyway.

Moose.See this site. More than the statistics (which actually don't show any data on IE 2.0), I found this part useful. "You cannot - as a web developer - rely only on statistics. Statistics can often be misleading. Global averages may not always be relevant to your web site. Different sites attract different audiences. Some web sites attract professional developers using professional hardware, while other sites attract hobbyists using old low spec computers. Also be aware that many statistics may have an incomplete or faulty browser detection. It is quite common by many web-stats report programs, not to detect the newest browsers. And this one. This is what it says - "Version 5.5 (released in 2000) Support for XML/XSL, CSS, print preview and HTC behaviors. Version 5.01 (released in 1999) Primarily a bug fix for 5.0. Version 5.0 (released in 1999) The first major browser with XML support. Version 4.0 (released in 1997). Support for CSS and DOM. Version 3.0 (released in 1996) is now used by less than 0.1%. Version 2.0 (released in 1995). It is too old. Nobody uses it. Version 1.0 (released in 1995). Does anyone remember it?"

Moose.I have (amongst others) a website without a URL (i.e. only accessible by IP address). Several would-be intruders probe for security holes, and they often use User-agent strings like IE5/Win95. Check for errors attempting to access admin-type pages, to see if that's what you're getting. Cheers, P
