Because the luggage handlers submersed it in water, or at least left it in the rain for a long, long time.

That's tragic mate. How bad's the warping?

It's around the toggle switch on the top. I suspect it could be sanded back and repainted, if the paint were to match. I wrote to the insurance people and am waiting to hear if they will let me claim on it, then I'll see if I can get a price on fixing it. There's a really good guitar repair guy in Hobart.

So, on this trip I brought back a US 1979 Les Paul and a 32 track recorder. Everything got wet. The Les Paul is damaged, the front is all warped. The 32 track, I've not plugged in yet, but something is rattling inside there, I am concerned. :(

Nor me... I'd be reluctant to fly any US airline for that matter. I just had the song jump in my head when I read your post. I hope your guitar recovers! Iain.

Check the electricals. What you don't want to have is a case where you have to replace the pickups - it would be a shame if you had to change them as you'd lose that original tone.

Well, I have been playing it, and that seems OK. Do I need to do more than just play and see if it works ?

I feel badly for you. Back in 1981 I took a bus from San Diego to Boston and put my 1975 Les Paul Custom in baggage. My guitar ended up going through South Carolina before getting to me a week later. The water-tight hardshell case was damaged, but my guitar wasn't so I got off really lucky and I never did that again.

So, on this trip I brought back a US 1979 Les Paul and a 32 track recorder. Everything got wet. The Les Paul is damaged, the front is all warped. The 32 track, I've not plugged in yet, but something is rattling inside there, I am concerned. :(

Nice guitar, real shame you messed it up. Frankly, I would go for a Tokai Les PAul. THey are every bit as good and cost a 1/5th the price. I used to have an old Hondo LP copy. It was pretty good, great sound, but you could never play up the neck as well as with a strat style guitar which is what I have now (its the top end Squirer and is rated as good as a strat, but cheaper). What amp do you use? I have a mid 70's Carlsbro 100w head (solid state). You dont see much about themon the net because they went bust, but they are supposed to be like Marshalls in that they produce a good rock sound, ad I have to say they are powerfull. Easially capable of giigging in the open air to a couple of hundred people. I have an old night club speaker to go with it ( has a secondary cone for the treble) and it seems to work OK despite being an 8ohm speaker).

Well, I have been playing it, and that seems OK. Do I need to do more than just play and see if it works ?
