This weekend, in the US, we celebrate Memorial Day, honoring those who gave their lives for freedom. Whether you agree with their fight or not, they were the ones put their lives on the line, and lost them. If you have an account on any social media site with an avatar, please change your avatar to you in uniform. If you have not been in the military, and have a family member who was, use a picture of them. Please do this through Tuesday to show how many serve, and to honor those that have.

The men and women of the armed forces deserve our highest regard and respect, no question what so ever. They do it so we can live here the way we do with out fear of our own people hurting us. Richard, it is not only patriots that surf the web. Please don't encourage people to broadcast the identity of these heros to every eye that has a net connection. Lift them high in honor within your own personal cicle and word of mouth will prevail.

I will keep my uniformed avatar up. If they can do something, they will anyway. I will not let them drive me down, and I hope you won't either. You have had four posts in three years, and I appreciate you felt strongly enough to make this one of them. :) Have a good holiday, and hold up a cold one for all those who can't.

No. That would mean the b*st*rds have made everyone roll over. Look at the numbers not the fear. If you do that then campaign to stop people smoking, that is thousands of times more dangerous.

If you ever disagree with a war, which in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan I do, then vent your anger with the politicians who started it, not the poor bloody Tommy Atkins fighting it. As ex-Army myself I know that you do as you are told by your senior officers, and they do as the politicians will. I was always taught that if you can read, thank a teacher, if you can read English, thank a soldier!

Do you have an aversion to the military? (serious Q, Elaine) I served and had a ball of a time, was taught a lot about 'Self Survival'*, and did things I would never have been able to do in Civvie Street. (* Laundry, Ironing, Sewing, Cooking etc!) There are reasons to have a military, and fighting illegal wars in the middle east isn't one of them. But I will always praise the men, it is the politicians we should despise.

The opposite Dave. That is why I reacted so strongly to the idea that those who serve or have served should have to hide their past in any way. I seem to be one of the few who wears a poppy every year. Not in pride but in thanks. I agree with the last part of your message as well. Maybe a bit off topic but I think ex-service people would often make good teachers, what do you think?

Reading Elaine's post, I can't see how you came to this conclusion. She was saying, as far as I can tell, that you shouldn't hide the identity/pride of those in uniform. If you do, you've as good as let them win.

Firstly, They would be able to maintain discipline in the classroom! :) Secondly, they would have a real world experience that would enable them to give a different spin on the subject matter and maybe enthuse the kids a little more. Thirdly, They could assign the disruptive pupils a more empirical approach whilst aiding the academic ones in a more theoretical way. It is what you do when you are in command of men, you play to their strengths.

Thanks. Both my Grandfather (WWII)and my father (PNG, Vietnam, Iran) served. Everyone whom I know knows this and that I am extremely proud of them. Those that want put their own picture up should do so with pride, and everyone else should thank 'em.

many folks consider me an anachronism. I am a pacifist by general nature trying to solve problems without violence, yet I am trained in hand-to-hand combad by a police and special forces trainer from college. I am a big political pessimist with little to no respect for the politicians, yet my job makes soldiers lives safer. I see no anachronism. There comes a time when words are useless and all avenues have been exausted, or surprise and malicious intent never allow a word to be spoken. And each man can only be held accountable for their own choices, choices made by others and ordered are the responsibility of the source, not the chain that it follows. :) have a great memorial day weekend.
