I don't think Mallorca HAS any "you have to see this" suggestions (except for the beach and the hotel bar) :-D

If I'm not mistaken, the inner parts are quite beautiful, laid back, great for hikes.

...and then it's time for a well deserved vacation! Haven't been around much lately. Much to do at work, and even more at home (kid needs attention! :)). On Friday I'm taking the family to a 5 star spa hotel on Mallorca (Sa Coma). We'll be staying for a week. I will turn off the phone, possibly even leave it at home. We've had a look at what Mallorca has to offer on the net, and we'll be bringing a travel guide. Too much to see and do, and too little time to spare. Does anybody have any "you have to see this!" suggestions for Mallorca?

You have a kid? Congrats! :) How old is he/she? The only time I've been out of India is summer of 2008 - 2 months in London, on work. Enjoy the vacation!

Cheers, Vikram. (Got my troika of CCCs!)

The train ride to, oh, what the hells it called, Puerto or some such on the north coast is supposed to be good. Apart from that its typical stuff. Beaches, restaurants, sailing, swimming.

Is "Mallorca" the same place I know as "Majorca?" In any case, I haven't visited either so I can't advise you. But I do wish you an excellent vacation; I'm enjoying mine immensely. Yesterday I helped to nurse a puppy suffering from Parvo back to health while building a fence to keep her isolated from other animals. Today I pulled weeds in my yard until my back nearly broke, and dug up a plant that I don't want in my yard but my neighbor does. Digging around Fountain Grass is a lot like wrestling razor blades, and I have a thousand tiny cuts on my arms to prove it. I'm having a ball, and I hope you enjoy your break as much... :-D

Roger, the Balearic Islands consist of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Ibiza is the Teenage Hell of Nightclubs, Drunken Sex and Drugs. Majorca is more family orientated, but still with clubs and mad teenagers, but it has many other attractions like Shows, Carting, water sports etc. Menorca is the quietest one where old people go to die. Full of cotton headed women and men who wear pork pie hats. See Here[^]

Majorca is the "bastardization" of Mallorca. Mainly for Brits and Germans so they will know how to pronounce it. :-D I am determined to enjoy the break! :)

Sorry to correct you on this one. The Spanish spell it Mallorca, but pronounce it with the Catalan LL. That is "My Orca". The British and Germans refer to it's original Latin spelling Majorca (meaning the Major Isle) but the English pronounce it in the latinate way, "Me Orca". The Germans pronounce using the typical non sounded J. Thus "Ma Orca" There is an English tendancy to say MA JORCA, sounding the J, but this is oft done for effect, deliberately for humour.

Soller to and from Port de Soller, really nice area.

It's time for a new signature.

Aha. I always figured it was zee Germans that had begun brutalizing the name, and then the Brits caught on. I have only seen the Majorca spelling on English and German sites... I have actually heard Brits pronounce it with a sounding J (Ma-D-jorca). I'm pretty Nazi (don't take me literally! :P) when it comes to names. Names aren't universal, and shouldn't be translated. They should be pronounced in the language they belong to. He's a fellow Swede, so he wimped out by not saying how people here pronounce it... (Don't ask me!) But I agree with Jörgen - it's up to the people who live in a country to name places, not us furrinners. Iain.

I have now moved to Sweden for love (awwww).

I think that's more of an example of French stubbornness to accept anything other than French, than a good example of idiomatic names. After all, wasn't it the French that attempted to make programming languages in France to only allow French keywords? :~

In German, it's "Malle" anyway (with german, not spanish "ll").

The slang for Mallorca in Swedish is "Mallis" (Swedish, not Spanish "ll"). I really don't like the use of that name though, because it sounds quite derogative in my ears.

I saw you walk right into his trap. But I'm glad you did because I stand corrected. I was expecting you to reply with "Svenska", but now I learnt it's the name for the Swedish language. :-O

Cheers, Vikram. (Got my troika of CCCs!)
