Sweden, a stone's throw due east from England...

I quote "Names aren't universal, and shouldn't be translated. They should be pronounced in the language they belong to." So Sweden is how you pronounce it? All languages have their idiomatic names for foreign places. Etat Unis for example.

Majorca is the "bastardization" of Mallorca. Mainly for Brits and Germans so they will know how to pronounce it. :-D I am determined to enjoy the break! :)

Well, you got me there. I'm not a purist, I'm a pragmatist. If I wrote "Sverige", chances are that most people won't know what I'm talking about.

I think that's more of an example of French stubbornness to accept anything other than French, than a good example of idiomatic names. After all, wasn't it the French that attempted to make programming languages in France to only allow French keywords? :~

In German, it's "Malle" anyway (with german, not spanish "ll").
Agh! Reality! My Archnemesis![^]
| FoldWithUs! | sighist | µLaunch - program launcher for server core and hyper-v server. The slang for Mallorca in Swedish is "Mallis" (Swedish, not Spanish "ll"). I really don't like the use of that name though, because it sounds quite derogative in my ears.

I saw you walk right into his trap. But I'm glad you did because I stand corrected. I was expecting you to reply with "Svenska", but now I learnt it's the name for the Swedish language. :-O
Cheers, Vikram. (Got my troika of CCCs!)

...and then it's time for a well deserved vacation! Haven't been around much lately. Much to do at work, and even more at home (kid needs attention! :)). On Friday I'm taking the family to a 5 star spa hotel on Mallorca (Sa Coma). We'll be staying for a week. I will turn off the phone, possibly even leave it at home. We've had a look at what Mallorca has to offer on the net, and we'll be bringing a travel guide. Too much to see and do, and too little time to spare. Does anybody have any "you have to see this!" suggestions for Mallorca?

I of course don't know what you typically enjoy seeing, but I liked: - Sa Calobra: The famous winding road to a touristy village close to a small, nice beach at the start/end of an impressive gorge. It is advisable to go there when the tourist buses are not there yet or have already left. I liked walking into the gorge; the beginning is very easy and you can just stop and go back as soon as it becomes too difficult. - Puig d'Inca: Easy to get on top by car, nice view[^] over the interior of the island - Cala Figuera: Beautiful village[^] on the SE coast. - Artà: Walk to the top of the hill[^] - Lluc Monastery[^] (climb the stairs to the top of the little hill, and the short 'botanical garden trail' behind the buildings is nice as well) I think Sa Calobra is a "must see", but you will probably have read about it in your travel guide; the others are not overwhelming, but just very nice places. I personally don't think Mallorca has so many absolute must-sees, but lots of small, nice places outside of the touristy areas. It all depends on how much time you are prepared to spend in a car, though. (I do assume you will have a car. Beware of the bikers, in particular in the mountains, who will recklessly block the road in groups and who appear to think driving in single file is only for cars, who they are intent on annoying as much as possible.) Regarding the spelling and pronunciation, I am German and didn't know there are people who write "Majorca" or not pronounce it "My Orca"...

Thanks for the information! Hopefully we'll get to rent a car for a day or two, so that it'll be easier to get around. Being dependent on tourist buses is just hopeless... :|

Really? Maybe I was just visiting bad tourist sites then. I did quite a lot of research (customer reviews) before settling for a hotel, and the name "Majorca" was very common. It seems that Mallorca is a very popular with German tourists, because many of the customer review forums were in German. :)

I've never understood this. The French come to Australia and call it Ausitraliie or some such shit but they expect me to pronounce Nice like my sister's daughter.

Indeed, I see that at least the German wikipedia redirects Majorca to Mallorca, so there must be at least some people here who use that spelling. I'm probably also waaay out of touch with the average German Ma_j_orca tourist, which I guess is a good thing[^]... :~

Roger, the Balearic Islands consist of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Ibiza is the Teenage Hell of Nightclubs, Drunken Sex and Drugs. Majorca is more family orientated, but still with clubs and mad teenagers, but it has many other attractions like Shows, Carting, water sports etc. Menorca is the quietest one where old people go to die. Full of cotton headed women and men who wear pork pie hats. See Here[^]

There are some caves on the eastern side in Porto Christo. It was many years ago but we rented a car and drove to the caves through the city of Manacor to Porto Christo, then back across the island through Inca then into the mountains to Palma (nice city). Very beautiful place, for sure you will spend some time doing nothing on the beach but there is a lot more to see there than beaches and hotels. The beach was awesome, the hotel nice but when I think of Mallorca, I remember that drive.

the Caves of Drach are amazing, you may have seen caves before but they have a massive cavern at the bottom with a lake, and a show with boats going across. If you want more than going to the beach, don't miss it. The North-West coast is truly spectacular, it's worth hiring a car & buying a map. There is also valldemosa, makes a brilliant day out, read up about it! Have fun, Majorca is a brilliant family holiday if you can get away from the crowds a bit.
