Screamin Deal

If you've wanted to build a NAS and were looking for a laptop hard drive as a boot device, NewEgg is currently selling recertified Samsung 40gb SATA drives for $14 each. I ordered two, one is for my new firewall pc. :)

For $14, who cares? I was originally going to get a small, cheap SSD, but this cost a lot less. I can now continue my wait for SSD prices to come a little closer to the surface of this planet. Bsides, I can always boot from a USB thumbdrive if the rotating assembly gives up the ghost. :)

Yeah, "recertified" would put me off. What does that mean, anyway? "I hereby certify again that this product totally looks like a hard drive".

The latter is common enough that major online retailer newegg doesn't even test parts the first time they're returned as not working; but instead waits and only does testing if they're returned a second time after being sold as open box. It's cheaper for them to eat the shipping on an occasional dud than to actually test the vast majority of working parts they get back.

I have *loads* of old IDE hard disks varying in capacity between 40 GB and 500 GB but can't really find anything that I can throw them all into which is low power consumption, doesn't take up much space, fanless, only spins up HDDs when they're actually needed, compatible with standard windows file sharing and doesn't cost too much. I've thought about this kind of thing: http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/acatalog/BAREBONE_SERVER_Series_2.html[^]. That would be good as a home server I guess but I don't think it's fanless and is a tad expensive really just for storage.

Jystad, 2001I'm with Jörgen on this - it's not the $14, but the time invested into restoing the machine plus followup cost, multiplied by probability of a recertified drive failing minus probability of a "normal" drive failing. Of course if you enjoy this type of job .... well, it's your fetish not mine ;)

| FoldWithUs! | sighist | µLaunch - program launcher for server core and hyper-v server. We're talking about a 500mb image. The time to restore that is negligble. Besides, the configuration data can be ssaved off to a USB drive just in case a complete reinstall of the OS/software is required. Really - the impact is pretty low since I'm moderately diligent about making backups.

I built a HTPC (160gb), a NAS(60gb), and a web server (250gb) using laptop hard drives for booting purposes. All of these drives came out of used laptops. I needed another one and this is a great deal for 40gb. A 16gb thumb drive costs more, and you're not guranateed any more on a thumb drive than you are on a typical ard drive. In fact, I've had more thumbdrives fail on my than actual hard drives.

But the little 40gb laptop drive won't make nearly as much noise or make nearly as much heat as a 1.5tb. The idea here isn't for space, but for heat/noise.

In which case, I'd recommend no drive at all. Absolutely no heat/noise.

I usually cba as it means finding a power outlet to plug them into as well leading to cables trailing everywhere. I've a 1.5 TB disk in my HTPC but there isn't any room in there for a 2nd disk. I'd probably use external HDs more if they only needed one cable to connect with the PC - like for full system images etc. I've 4 USB 2 ports and an eSATA port on the front of my main PC but its awkward getting at all the sockets etc at the back.

The drive i'm talking about (the 40gb) is for a boot drive. I really only need about 500mb. :) I have a boot drive, a dvd rom, and three 2tb drives in a htpc case. I have thw additional 2tb drives (for movie storage) in my nas box.

I can actually use a USB thumbdrive, but that's a lot of "work" compared to just using a standard hard drive. It would probably take the better part of an hour to prepare the thumbdrive for booting (the OS is Linux-based).
