The Department of Conservation just issued this edict: The production and use of two materials that we have taken for granted for too long is finally taking too heavy a toll on our planet. Paper and ink both draw from Mother Earth's pool of natural resources. Trees, and plants that could be used to feed the starving, are squandered daily in volumes that would astound our forefathers, and will deny our grandchildren a happy life. With the advent of the "paperless office", it was hoped that this savage drain on our world's resources would lessen, but this has turned out not to be the case. To help ameliorate the situation, it has been decided that numbers and letters which consume too much ink and take up too much space on a page are to be removed from the language. Henceforth, use of all digits except the number one are prohibited, so, for example, next year will be the year 1111, the year following it 1111, etc, and all alphanumeric characters except the letter i iii iiiiiii iiiiii. I think the real amazing thing is that people are surprised when a 100 year event (flood, hurricane, earthquake, etc.) happens. After all, they're supposed to happen at a rate of 1 per 100 years on the average. Geological evidence seems to indicate that they've been happening at that rate for eons. Now that we have these here nifty interwebs, when normal things happen, too many people think it's the end of the world. It's like they engage in "worst case thinking" and feed themselves into a frenzy. The only ones who gain from all that are politicians and crooks, which are basically the same crowd. They promise to save us all from an event that has a minuscule probability.
