I'm never bothered by the "hot new" electronic gadgets, either -- because I know there will always be better and cheaper options, a few months down the line (unless it was a stoopid idea, in which case it just dies). Give me a new woodworking machine or set of cutting tools, though...

I wanna be a eunuchs developer! Pass me a bread knife!

So funny you mention that. I just picked that up as another hobby of late, and built my own entertainment center. I didn't even know what a jigsaw or router was when I started, so I had to learn. I was analyzing an entirely new dataset! So much fun!

A very accurate description! What has never failed to amaze me is that you need precisely the same mindset to be a good coder or a good carpenter.

Not really; with coding, measuring twice isn't quite so important. :-D

I think I might be a geek. However, I get the feeling, after comparing myself to the droves of self-proclaimed geeks that I'm not. I read somewhere that one of the most label-inflicting habits of a geek is akin to liking techo-gadgets or having some strange cultish affinity for Lord of the Rings (and the like). I could care less about almost all newer gadgets though, iPhone or i(anything) for that matter. I also can't speak klingon, and have no desire. So while I consider myself a geek because I find great joy in developing databases, data-driven apps and turning complex datasets into understandable information, I don't think I fit the mold. If not a geek, then what? Anal? Odd? lol

You describe yourself as what I would typically refer to as a nerd...or even as specific as a software nerd. Geeks are typically the bard of Tech world whereas you describe yourself as simply a programmer in the tech world (you are probably plenty more outside the tech world). I consider myself a geek because not only do I enjoy programming (although probably not quite as in depth as you), I also enjoy gaming (both computer and board), building and fixing computers, tech gadgets (I follow the gadgets but don't buy them), technology in general (I like to keep an eye on what NASA/CERN/Boeing/Lockheed are doing...or at least as much as they tell us anyway), Sci-fi and fantasy, role playing games (Pen and Paper...not live action). I don't necessarily consider the following as geek-traits, they help to keep me normal and able to attact a mate of the opposite gender; I also have a healthy afinity for home projects like wood working, electronics (and electrical work), plumbing, digging in mud (I'm currently building a retaining wall in my back yard), lawncare, etc.

lol Nice diagram. So now that this small group has pretty clearly placed me in the nerd group, I would like to know where the nerd parties are? I notice geeks have all these crazy parties. Where are the nerd parties? Or do they have parties too but relabel them educational seminars? :-\

lol Nice diagram. So now that this small group has pretty clearly placed me in the nerd group, I would like to know where the nerd parties are? I notice geeks have all these crazy parties. Where are the nerd parties? Or do they have parties too but relabel them educational seminars? :-\
