I don't see the point in battery powered cars. The car may not emit any nastyness, but the electricity that powers isn't summoned by magic either.

Large power plants are much more efficient at turning fuel into useful energy than a little car engine, and produce much less waste (On a percentage basis). Plus, the electricity that powers an electric car doesn't necessarily come from fossil fuels. It could be wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, etc.

But it's still not 'zero emissions' is it. I understand that overall it would be better for the environment but it's not an ideal solution is it? How much longer would you actually get before we still run out of enough fuel to *cough* cheaply run vehicles?

If we currently had more power coming from renewable energy then this would have a bigger impact but at the moment I believe only around 7% of the power in the UK comes from renewable sources. Maybe in another 10 Years the electric car will have a better time, and maybe it won't look so damn ugly.

Too bad making and disposing of those batteries is as bad for the environment as it is. Right now the cars are not all that green yet.

If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

The vehicle itself doesn't cause any air pollution... That's what they mean. Sure, the power plants that make the electricity do, but keep in mind that if we all suddenly switched our power plants to non-polluting sources, the electric cars would still be just fine as-is. Think of it in programming terms. If the client machines have a standard interface (Electricity), you can replace the server with anything you want, as long as it works with that interface. Currently, we have cars that require gasoline, so you can't replace the server (Oil/petrol infrastructure) unless it fits that interface. Electricity is a more generic API than 87-octane :)

I don't know the actual numbers, but Wikipedia says it's 18% globally[^] and rising. You guys are lagging behind the curve :)

Yeah... That thing really does look idiotic. It's alright for it to look different from the "standard" sedan/coupe styles, but come on... That thing looks like it already hit a brick wall.

You must be confusing the French with us Swedes. The Swedish S-tank even had an extra crewmember for driving backwards. He had other functions as well, but was facing backwards and had his own steering wheel. YES this is true. It also used advanced hydraulics to aim with the entire tank, as the cannon was fixed (no turret - which made sense until gyro-stabilization was invented and other tanks became capable of firing without stopping). exterior [^] schematic [^] Designed in 1958, now history. We now have German tanks (Leopard II)...
