Rob Coldecott has posted here [^] about finishing up after 21 years with the same employer. Anyone top that ? (My longest spell with one company was 6 years)

Yeah. What a disloyal B*stard!! :-D I wouldn't post it in his thread as he was obviously already upset at the thought of leaving all his coworkers.

Just passed my 18 year mark hear. I've been a RF Engineer, system engineer, manager (until I wised up), and now, a software engineer.

I got my 20 year service award in August 2009, and as part of this, i have been in the same oilfield (Forties, North Sea) for 18 years........ I am 37 now, and wonder when i will say no more offshore, every few years i start to get itchy feet, but i keep getting assigned to a different project and/or platform every few years, which means i get a change of scenery, usually each change comes with promotion and/or more responsibility (and money), so mustn't grumble. The only thing is that with offshore working, you are only working for 6 months of the year, the rest is time off, so to give all that leave up would be quite a change.

I worked for my first real company for 16 years, then spent 9 years as a consultant. I later went to work for one of my best clients and was there for 3 years as a consultant and 9 years as an employee. It was a French company and I enjoyed it immensely. Now I've been back consulting for about a year and a half.

Unless local laws give 100% of all lifetime company perks/benefits/etc the moment you start there's always a threshold were jerk bean counters can sack people to avoid giving them access to the next tier.

When I owned my own business, though often didn't pay myself: 5 years, 4 months My current job: 3 years, 7 months Most other jobs are all around 2 years 6 months. Which is about the the time it takes the companies I work for to go bankrupt or lose so much money they have massive layoffs. Interestingly, that was about the schedule of my own company above with our primary product--it stayed around longer due to me using it for contracting.

No, but in a contempory vein I consider nearly nine years very long, which time I spent serving in the Air Force and gained the trade of radio technicion back in the day.

My father joined a company straight from school, then retired from it a few years ago... So that would be 40 odd years. Even national service was done while still technically employed. But those days are long gone. I felt a bit of a fossil being with my last lot form 14 years - and that was technically two lumps of 7. Iain.

I have now moved to Sweden for pillage and to steal their women - fair's fair, after all...
