I quit when Smitha was pregnant and she said she won't have second hand smoke in the house. I have smoked a few odd cigs after that, usually when I meet an old friend who still remembers me as a smoker. But for some reason I've never really felt the need to go back. Maybe I was never really an addict.

    Regards, Nish

I too feel the same. I haven't had it for long time now. But after that brilliant dinner after a bit of scotch I had, I really want a puff. I know if I can go through this initial urges, I can make it to the healthy World. But for now, I am trapped in the darkness.

Yeah, I still have that urge. After a few single malts and some fried Kerala style beef, I feel the need for a smoke. If there's another smoker present, I may go for a cigarette.

That's a huge problem with me. I am almost always surrounded with them. I really need a lot of will power to go through this.

I quit smoking cigarettes back in 1995 and started smoking a pipe. I quit smoking the pipe about a year and a half ago. I had smoked for over 40 years by then. First, make up your mind -- really, really make up your mind. In my case, other than the urge to do something, after about 2 days I started feeling sort of light headed, probably from more oxygen to the brain. I laid down, closed my eyes and told myself it would pass. It usually passed after 15 or 20 minutes. By the time a week had passed, the urges became less and after about a month I started having days when I didn't even think about smoking. I also used to always go outside and have a smoke when I was thinking about my work, programs, etc. It was a nice time to concentrate and relax a few minutes. I stopped that routine and now just do something besides smoke -- go for a walk, have a cup of coffee, bother my wife, etc. Make up your mind and focus on the benefits. After quitting, I stopped coughing at night and I haven't had an allergy attack or cold since then. I feel much better, but it took a month or so to get to feeling that quitting was worth the effort. On the down-side, I put on about 30 lbs, but I've adjusted my lifestyle and am slowly taking that back off. That was the biggest challenge, since I was always skinny my entire life until after I quit. But you must make up your mind. Your mind will try to play all sorts of tricks on you to get a hit. I still get an urge to smoke every once in awhile. The urges are just easier to ignore. Good luck! Since you haven't smoked as long as I did, perhaps it will go easier. If you keep at it, you'll be glad you quit.

I am a smoker for past 7 years. I really do not feel like smoking but also don't feel like giving it up. I am trying hard to give it up (with a really heavy head).

What you need is an anti-smoking girlfriend or a wife :-D

If you still remember India, the ones which are sold as Scotch Whiskey (they aren't really a scotch). Something like the Jack Daniels, Chivas Regal, Ballantine's (had tonight,).

So, the key to quitting a bad habit is to make the wife pregnant? With having so many bad habits to give up, I guess I'll be forming a home grown football team then.   Seriously though, I don't have any bad habits. :)

So, I turned 25 yesterday and gave up smoking as birthday gift to my self. I haven't had a fag for quite a longer time(over 30 hours). Any quitters with some tips? Right now I am really desperate to get a fag.

You can do it - just think about the passive smokers around you - when you stop they stop too. And taking a line out of Bourne Ultimatum - "It gets easier".

Chivas and Ballentine's are both scotches. Jack Daniels is not scotch - in fact it's closer to bourbon than scotch. During my last Trivandrum visit, I was kinda stunned to see my younger cousins all well versed in single malts and stuff like that which during my college days was something you saw in movies and read in books :sigh:

What about those back aches you got while picking up mammoth weights? Any habit that harms your health (mental/physical etc) is bad.

I am not technically good with it. All I care about is that if it costs good it should taste good. I had Black Velvet once and I just love it. Never really got a chance to taste that again.

I've been a health freak for some time now. Rewinding my life back to a few years, I and my gym partner started working out together. Back then, he had better power, agility and muscular build than me. We worked out together for about 14 months, and I became better than him. That's despite the fact that his diet was better than mine (he's a non vegetarian, so he gets excellent quality protein from meat and eggs, while I had to eat whey protein like a wimp). By around 18 months, I was far superior to him and he chose a different partner because he couldn't keep with me. :) The only difference between me and him was that he was a smoker. Just give it up, man. It's a VERY bad habit and it spoils your health more than you think it does.

What about those back aches you got while picking up mammoth weights? Any habit that harms your health (mental/physical etc) is bad.

The disc is normal now (see sig) and I've started working out. That happened not because of lifting mammoth weights, but because the equipment failed (and my posture was slightly wrong, adding up fuel to the fire) and the weights came against my spine.

Exercise improved my metabolism permanently. My health is above average, and I can run a fookin' marathon (I'll be one of the few who will fly to Mumbai in 2011 for running in Mumbai marathon on behalf of my company!). I think working out is a good habit.

I am a smoker for past 7 years. I really do not feel like smoking but also don't feel like giving it up. I am trying hard to give it up (with a really heavy head).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I really enjoyed smoking, too. But after the first couple of weeks, it was definitely worth quitting.

That is a very good example. Real incentive for a smoker to give it up.

Yes but a gym partner is just a gym partner, a cigarette is a smoke.  Only joking. You are of course correct.
