Forgot there was an SP3. Considering that Microsoft tends to push most of its updates, I don't think there would be too many people without SP3 on their machines. If, however, Microsoft refuses to continue to update XP, then we'll have a problem. Also, the article just talks about updates. It doesn't mean that you can't manually get the latest software if you check for them, unless of course they refuse to install on SP2 and under.

They may not install manually but if they do then "unsupported" means you're on your own if you run into any subsequent problems.

I'm on SP3. My lappy only has 1 GB of RAM (seemed like loasds when I bought it) So I'll be on XP till the hardware gives up the ghost. It runs Ubuntu pretty well though so if I ever get my Radio Control Simulator to work in WINE I'll move to a more advanced OS.

Does XP x64 SP2 count? It's newer and doesn't have an SP3.. but if you leave out the x64 part it's still "XP SP2"

        They mean XP x86 SP2.

Supported, by Microsoft, also tends to be similar. :P

My parents are still on it. Had a few computers get trashed by the SP3 install. TBH I should probably reinstall Windows on my dad's computer anyway, it was installed way back in something like 2003 and has accumulated a lot of bloat in that time. As for XP in general, I dual-boot to XP SP3 from time to time as I still use some software that doesn't work in Win 7 64-bit - things like the versions of PowerDVD and Nero I have which I don't think I can upgrade from as they came with a new computer, etc. In general I try to use virtualization to avoid having to go into XP to run most older apps though.

Upgraded my Dad to SP3 a while back.

Mine was trashed by SP2 necessitating a reinstall. I held off SP3 until Easter when I was forced to reinstall XP again due to a frozen boot problem. Would have needed it about then anyway for VS 2010.

SP3 is fine, it's SP2 that isn't. Or did you mean to say you were still on SP2?

My system is a dual boot with xp and server 2008 xp is there to support some old games I like. - e.g. metal fatigue. And I don't care about the support or patches for it as I stopped updating it long ago. Yes the company I was in is using xp across and they have no plans to upgrade at all. X|

Absolutely. I have no need for Hasta-la-Vista or Weven-Wobble. ;) That said, my main dev machine is XP, I run 64 bit Vista on an HP laptop, and on a much older laptop I have W7 installed, as well as on a VirtualBox. And my client has thousands of XP installations, all working fine. Marc

My brother still is on Windows XP SP2.5. That is, a Windows XP SP2 installation where the SP3 setup crashed half-way. Surprisingly, the systems still works OK and he refuses to reinstall the OS. I upgraded both of my machines from Vista to Windows 7 in March. Last time I used XP was in 2006 (I was one of the few Vista users who thought it was OK). Usage Statistics of SharpDevelop 4.0, April+May 2010 (we released Beta 1 only yesterday, so all this data is from early adopters of our Alpha versions):

                                        XP SP2: 3%
                                        XP SP3: 20%
                                        Server 2003/XP x64: 1%
                                        Vista SP1: 5%
                                        Vista SP2: 10%
                                        Windows 7: 60%

The remaining 1% is shared between Vista (no SP) and Windows 7 Release Candidate (WTF, didn't that expire before April 2010?).

Not if you're masochistic enough of a cheapskate to set your computer clock back a few months.

You mean that connecting to today's Internet with a 10 year old system is not crazy?

No? And "Running XP SP2" doesn't mean necessarily "connecting to the internet" - at least not as primary function of the system.
