I don't use it except for support of work. The project lead refuses to move from XP and absolutely refuses to allow anything other than XP as the official environment.... But I am long since Win7x64 at home and work, I use VM systems to support the Pl. :)

oh bother! i still use it quite a bit.. it's running as a VM image at the moment which i scraped off an old laptop that threatened to die on me. what can i say, the project (.net) has been going on for so long i didn't feel like upgrading everything and reinstalling everything... thing is: it just worked, and it's not broken... so why fix it? (although it looks like that's gonna change soon) ;P

Under normal circumstances I would consider this question totally irrelevant. Then I tried to install VS2010 on the office dev machine, rejected, must have SP3 to install :sigh: . Over 6k machines in our organisation and all running xp sp2.

Yes, Microsoft generally force you to have the most patched versions of any prerequisites well before other vendors do. For the past few months pretty much any new app. from Microsoft has been mandating at least Win XP SP3. And some are now mandating Vista or higher. Coincidentally I was forced to apply SP3 after I needed to reinstall Windows for other reasons. I already knew that SP2 was being end-of-lifed so I just stuck on SP3 at that point. And then VS 2010 was released a couple of days later and that required it.

That too is being end-of-lifed at the same time.

Notice that my post is not about XP as such but specifically about XP SP2. SP3 will be supported for another 4 years. This is 3 years longer than XP as a whole should have been supported for but I guess they've extended it due to customer demand.

plus the VM image helps... if it does happen to break => rollback system image (restore points have never really worked for me)

8 out of 10 systems at home are still running XP. 1 Vista and 1 Win7. All except one at work runs XP and that one oddball is running Win7 I paid for myself. Yes, both of my workstations in my home office as well as my laptop are still using XP-SP2. And my server is still Windows Server 2003. So far these OSs have maintained their stability for what I do (a lot of development and project work), so why change? At some point I'll upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 but right now I just don't have the time...

We have a dedicated computer here that we've been using for well over 12 years that is still running Win2K. It is connected to the internet - but very little surfing is done on it. Maybe an occasional Google search for a product price or something. But it's days are numbered since I just received notice from one of our software vendors that they are dropping support for Win2K this year. Bummer. But I guess I got my money's worth out of it. So I can't complain. As for XP - heck ya! Have several laptops running XP with no plans (or desire) to upgrade. The day will come, but not today. But again - all of these systems are dedicated to running specific software for specific tasks. And web surfing is not one of those tasks. They are rarely even connected to the internet. But.....on my desktop that I use every day for code development and web surfing? Not on your life! It's 64 bit Win7.

                                        But are they running XP SP2 or SP3? It's only SP2 that's being end-of-lifed.

Microsoft has locked me in to XP SP2 against my will. They won't let me install SP3. Last time I tried, it was some complaint about a patch they think I'd installed. The resolution was to uninstall the patch and try again. I did, SP3 still wouldn't instal.. for the same reason -- they wanted me to uninstall the (now uninstalled) patch. That's kind of hard to do, so I gave up. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wicrosoft. Its not all bad, at least we know our software still runs on XP SP2. We still have systems out there that run XP SP2 and will probably stay there for a good long while since they don't get connected to the Internet.. ever.
