Anyone still on Win XP SP2...?

8 out of 10 systems at home are still running XP. 1 Vista and 1 Win7. All except one at work runs XP and that one oddball is running Win7 I paid for myself. It will take winning the Lottery before management will see the need to upgrade since everything is still "working."

Yes, both of my workstations in my home office as well as my laptop are still using XP-SP2. And my server is still Windows Server 2003. So far these OSs have maintained their stability for what I do (a lot of development and project work), so why change? At some point I'll upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 but right now I just don't have the time...

We have a dedicated computer here that we've been using for well over 12 years that is still running Win2K. It is connected to the internet - but very little surfing is done on it. Maybe an occasional Google search for a product price or something. But it's days are numbered since I just received notice from one of our software vendors that they are dropping support for Win2K this year. Bummer. But I guess I got my money's worth out of it. So I can't complain. As for XP - heck ya! Have several laptops running XP with no plans (or desire) to upgrade. The day will come, but not today. But again - all of these systems are dedicated to running specific software for specific tasks. And web surfing is not one of those tasks. They are rarely even connected to the internet. But.....on my desktop that I use every day for code development and web surfing? Not on your life! It's 64 bit Win7.

But are they running XP SP2 or SP3? It's only SP2 that's being end-of-lifed.

Microsoft has locked me in to XP SP2 against my will. They won't let me install SP3. Last time I tried, it was some complaint about a patch they think I'd installed. The resolution was to uninstall the patch and try again. I did, SP3 still wouldn't instal.. for the same reason -- they wanted me to uninstall the (now uninstalled) patch. That's kind of hard to do, so I gave up. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wicrosoft. Its not all bad, at least we know our software still runs on XP SP2. We still have systems out there that run XP SP2 and will probably stay there for a good long while since they don't get connected to the Internet.. ever.

If you plan to move to VS 2010/.NET 4 before upgrading to Win 7 you'll need XP SP3.

Yes! We are a global, multi-national, multi-billion dollar industry in the food sector. I have one of the more advanced machines running Win XP sp2 (tablet edition), with many of my co-workers still using Win 2K. Our company is currently going through a upgrade to - get this - Vista! :wtf: When my company was purchased by this bigger organization 8 years ago, we were on the cusp of upgrading to XP. They caught us about a month before the release and told us to wait because they wanted standardized systems and they were planning an upgrade. Eight years later we are almost getting ready to probably upgrade to a currently out-of-date OS. Does anyone know why I still work here?

Kevin... Thanks for the "heads up"... I have all the software downloaded from my MSDN subscription but again have had no time to start tinkering with it. I have too many development projects on my plate both at work and at home...

I remember once reading about some division of British Gas upgrading from DOS to Windows 2000 and Office 2000 in about 2001. But at least there was no later version of Windows at the time.

I believe we're running SP3, but it won't matter. Until I took over here as software development manager 2 years ago, they were still using InterDev. I had to purchase VS2K3 myself to get them in a better world. Later it took arm twisting on a project that management wanted to finally move to VS2K8.
