...and given that Microsoft too how many years to get Vista out there, I think I'd give Mr Jobs another few weeks before clamouring for more MacOS stuff and for performing the last rights. Lame.

I agree: even the title strikes me as a complete non-sequitur. I mean, do companies usually kill off moderately successful products because another product is doing much better? (Especially when the less successful one serves as the only development platform for the successful one)

The iPod line has been the star making Apple grow the most significantly since iTunes hit the PC. I recall reading in 2006 about how the Mac line was going to end because of the iPod. Again in 2009 because of the iPhone. I guess 2010 is time for the iPad to get this headline. Apple is not killing one of Steve Jobs' biggest babies (OSX is a repackaged NeXt OS with some improvements) and they aren't going to kill one of their most profitable divisions. In the really high end market ($1500+ per machine) Apple was dominant last I knew with over 80% of the market. That same market has the highest profit margin. (I'm not going to defend how much they cost, they had been competitive a few years ago but seem to be really putting the screws in of late. It's really insane right now.)

It is also HEAVILY based on how NeXTOS was designed for "look and feel" which I think we can all agree is what matters most to Mr. Jobs. As long as it looks the way he likes and acts how he wants, Steve Jobs wouldn't care if Mac OS and the iPhone OS were run on baby seal fur and Fairy farts.

The article is more of a joke than anything. If Macs die it's only because there will be a new desktop to replace it - that is unless desktops become obsolete all across the board. I mean really, making the assumption that just because the desktop wasn't talked about at one conference means they're gonna dump it them is just absurd.
