VS2010 install side by side with VS2008, VS2005 and VS2003

No but I have VS2008, VS2005 and VS2003 + vc6 installed at work on one machine.

Yeah. Most hard drives can't handle having that much crappy software installed on the same partition, and their nature is to deficate all over your computer the minute you try to access any version.

Not really. Sometimes you leave the old versions installed for older projects that were never converted (for whatever reason). Still 4 versions is unusual. But 2 versions is quite common, and even 3 wouldn't be that unheard of.

I have VS2008, VS2005 and VS2003 + vc6 installed on the work machine. The reason is I have C++ projects (100K + lines each) in each version and porting old code to newer compilers takes time.

Yeah, but 4 versions would put you in a very small minority. Now you'd probably have VS 2010 too - making that 5 versions. :)

Well, I've got 2010 and 2008 installed without any problems but why would you want all of them installed?
My current favourite quote is: Punch them in the face, see what happens!

<bitter experience> No problem installing multiple versions, but just try uninstalling one of them. The uninstall goes fine, but your .NET frameworks **** up royally, and seemingly random programs cease to work (I have a machine that has been unable to start PSP X2 for several months, because I dared to remove VS2008!). No amount of jiggery-pokery with the .NET frameworks seem to help -- partly because you can't even roll back some of them, because VS overwrote the original installation files, then deleted them on its way out. </bitter experience>

I will have that in Q4 when we renew our academic licences. I am not sure I will use it for any project though. I am just trying to find time for one of my programmers to port a major project from VS2005 to VS2008 because VS2005 does not play well (crashes about every 3 compiles) with my Windows7 64 bit i7 box.

Not really. I am in a position where our customer base are developers and I frequently have them emailing me code that doesn't quite work right with our product's API. In order to troubleshoot potential issues, I have to be able to compile it in whatever compiler they use. As a result, I have VS2k10, 2008, 2005, 2003, VS6 (including VB6), eclipse, and netbeans. I also have support for runnign various scripting languages.

I would create a virtual machine and reinstall old versions in it, and that would leave just one version on your main desktop, thus enforcing your hatred of the legacy apps that you have to maintain.

Jystad, 2001I have yet to see a VM perform in any way near native performance meaning compiles take 2 to 10 times as long in a VM and this is annoying for tools that take 1 hour to build on a native i7 system.

Are there any VM players that behave nicely with multiple monitors? I have an MSVPC for XP stuff but being trapped on a single screen is unacceptable these days.
