Apologies for that unscheduled break in our program. We're suffering extreme heat in Toronto today (OK, extreme for Toronto, not for anywhere with half-decent weather) and apart from the roads melting, birds falling out of the sky, and Leaf's fans actually taking off their toques, we also had power outages across this first-world city of ours which caused mayhem in our Hosting centre. The backup generators kicked in then the HVAC started groaning at the seams as it sought to cope with the load and so when we saw the alerts go off we decided discretion was the better part of valour and shut down most of our servers until we were convinced things were under control and rivers of molten server would not be pouring across the server room floor. Dave braved the blistering, tyre-popping 33C and headed up to the hosting centre with large bags of ice and a small personal fan. Needless to say the guys up there looked oddly at him, and Toronto traffic being Toronto traffic, by the time Dave got up not only was everything back to normal, but the sun had also dipped noticeably in the sky and glow under the server room door was down to a dull red. With everything back to normal, the aircon puffing away quite nicely, thank you very much, we then set to turning on the servers again and a 5 minute outage turned into a much longer outage as nets, sharp sticks and cattle prods were needed to corral the various elements back into their cages. The servers are back to normal, humming away, no doubt tired and excited by their big adventure.

The hamsters or the human occupants? I would think the Hamsters would be cheering for ice and a fan. :-D

What happened? Were the bands on the hamster wheels wound to the point that when released instead of providing a jumpstart to the power system they instead sent small furry animals flying across the data center?

It's hot, the ice cream truck comes around, you fish around in your pocket and think "woohoo! I've got enough for a single soft-serve, choc-dip AND nuts". Short term gain for long term pain. Gets me everytime.

Having been busy with a little thing called my life, I hadn't even noticed that the site had been down. So when I refreshed and saw 'Outage' from Chris Maunder, I quite naturally thought that at last the hamster, third wheel from the left, had finally come out of the closet. So in the hope of finding an amusing/cute picture of a hamster in puce spandex, or similar, I foolishly googled on 'gay hamster' (WARNING: do not try this at home!!). I'm going for a lay down in a dark room now......

I'm going for a lay down in a dark room now......

foolish... very foolish... sorry... but even as naive as I am, I would never do that. I might attempt a very careful google search about hamsters, dressed hamsters, hamsters dressed in leather... slowly, carefully, building up the search....

OK, so I tried it, but not an image search. I wonder why there's a gay site named 'gayhampster' ? I guess if I understood, I'd be gay ?

I screwed up a search once, when my wife was nearby. Luckily she was not watching. I am EXTREMELY cautious about forming searches from broad to narrow carefully, one word at a time. :)
