So time to change my mythology....

Someone else started naming their computers after Greek Gods/Goddesses and Hyperion got hit today with "same name on the network) bit.... well, I figured it had to happen eventually... so I am finally jumping ship to a new naming scheme... Aztec/Maya/Inca. I figured unless we get a 2012 obsessed person in here, they are not likely to think of Adawulcanak or Tliewatuwadjigican. Oh someone might, maybe, possibly think of Quetzalcoatl, but there is no way they are spelling it without a google, so chances are it won't be worth trying. :) I lasted 4 years naming machines from Greek Gods. :) Not too bad. :) Think I can last at least 4 years with Aztec/Maya/Inca Mythological names? :-D

I remembered someone naming their machines are different pasta types, you could go a long way with that.

I name mine after characters and worlds in my novels... Been doing that for 15 years (I "wrote" the stories long before I put them on paper)... The first desktop I named was Xen, followed by Aeos, then PrameKlen, and now Orp. My laptop is Rikket, my netbook is Nwerp (Who was actually cut out of book 2), and my NAS is Rotai. Even if they weren't just on my home network, I could pretty much guarantee that I'd never have to worry about conflicts :)

Because it's kind of cool, and more memorable than XP32Bit225607 You got to name it something, might as well have a good time. I name my home machines after Apollo moon shots. My f'd up machines through the years end up being Apollo_13 - on purpose.

It would be better if you name the characters of your novels after computer names. :-\

Maintain a list of unique 32 bit numbers and just assign them to your machines. Then you can just remember the numbers instead of arbitrary names. To make it more reasonable you might think about splitting the number up into octets.

The last time I had opportunity to name servers I went with Transformers. The Autobots were all on the internal side of the network and everything that touched or was in the DMZ was a Decepticon. The only exception to the rule was Soundwave...I mean, what else are you going to name your internal database server? Bumblebee and Cliffjumper were the DNS. PDC was OptimusPrime and the BDC was OmegaSupreme. Wow. Now I've both dated myself and managed to expose the inner nerd. (My actual Omega Supreme toy is still in the garage...might be time to bring it out for my kids...)

Which one was WheelJack? And what about Ravage? I always loved Ravage and Laserbeak... Or where those just schemas under Soundwave? And what about the Dinobots? Swoop, Snarl, Slag, Grimlock, and... uh.... damn, my memory fails me again...
