How fast and how accurate are you at striking your keyboards ? How did you learn typing ? How many fingers are you using ? I am an average typist, and would like to improve my skills, but I didn't find any good tool/app to do so. Any recommendation ? Maybe the first step would be to switch to Das Keayboard Ultimate...

3, maybe 4. The forefingers and thumbs on both hands, though the left thumb is rarely used.

Is this an average, or did you have a finger half chopped away by an axe ?

Most of them. I learned to touch-type on a manual typewriter years ago and I can still nearly touch-type when I am focused, but I've got wandering hands and need to look down regularly to stay on target.

Did you look at the Dvorak keyboard? Aparently the typing speed record is held by someone using a Dvorak. There are drivers available for the programmer Dvorak layout here[^] and just this morning I ordered a couple of sets of Programmer Dvorak keyboard stickers here[^]. The first link has a link to a basic course in Dvorak. I might be harping on a bit about this now, since I haven't used a Dvorak keyboard myself yet, so i'm just going to leave it at that. :-D

I got my hands on an old dusty copy of "The typing of the dead". B Movie zombie typing action  Was reasonable fun to play and got my touch typing up to scratch. I should really have another play with it as too much coding has wrecked my touch typing skills

Around 5 I think, mostly index and middle finger occasionally ring finger, little finder is used for the shift keys. My dad did buy us a typing game a long time ago, but I always found it too difficult. I think I'll have to dig it out and try it again, if your interested the game was this[^] ;P It is actually very good

I never miss when I'm using my lucky bat, the speed depends on how angry I am... I took a typing class in high school, it was early 90's and at the time I could see if being useful for writing papers during college. I didn't really consider that I would take to software development and be typing all day 5 days a week. The class was a geared towards secretaries though and a lot of the work was formatting different styles of documents. I barely broke 30 words a minute and actually flunked on quarter do to poor speed and accuracy. I now type at around 25 words per minute and use 9 fingers (I don't use my left thumb, and my right pinkie is only used for the enter key).

I taught myself to type on an old Smith Corona typewriter mainly because I was tired of my high school papers taking forever to type. I didn't see my first computer keyboard until about a year later. As for how I learned, I typed a lot of those sentences that contain every letter in the alphabet. I'm sure DD can give the name for what those sentences are called. I also typed a few verses of whatever song lyrics I liked at the time. I use 10 fingers, no toes.

There are two answers to that. The first one is rude, and the second one depends on whether or not you're from Norfolk - in which case, 12 fingers and 3 thumbs.

I use all fingers and thumbs and touch type quite accuractely and fast. However it isn't "proper" touch typing, it's a self-taught version learnt from spending way too much time on IRC back in 1996 whilst at university, I probably only use the "correct" fingers for the keys on about 80% of the keys. Still, it suits the purpose :)

One less than normal, as I fractured my left index finger at the weekend :) however typically I use all but the pinkies, but they stray in from time to time.

Same here, though it was a couple of years later and it wasn't IRC but online games..

I am quite slow, anyway, since the brain is by no means faster, the overall system is balanced. :)

Same here. In school after a typing class I could do ~55WPM accurately. I can only code or write documentation at about 20WPM max; guess how fast I can still accurately type.
