I guess I am average, although some 13 years ago I went through army teleprinterist training at which point I was pretty fast. Anyway, I find my typing skills useful only when I write text. For coding, I spend far more time figuring how to work around limitations of various frameworks I use to improve my productivity ;P

I'm a touch-typist. I learnt typing when I was around 10-11.. Initially using guide books and my grand dad's ancient typewriter - which didn't get me very far, then shortly after, when we got our first computer (Aaah.. Windows 3.1) using some kind of typing software that was installed in it - I think it was called Typing Tutor. It was a handy skill to have for earning pocket money, not to mention looking cool in computer class. I haven't checked recently, but back then I could do up to 45-50WPM with ~97% accuracy. Probably not as good anymore.

In high school, on a manual typewriter with the letters blacked out. You learned the position of the letters and typed with all fingers; thumbs are used only for the space bar. What skills are you trying to improve? Speed? Accuracy? Focus first on accuracy and then on speed. As for how to improve, find a book or magazine article you like and retype it. Then you are concentrating on the act of typing, not on composing what your written thoughts should be. Tim

I’m using 4 fingers and in the most cases I need to watch the keyboard while typing. I also very heavily use the mouse to extend that in one of my previous companies I had been asked from some sales guy if “I’m really a programmer”, “Cause the programmers don’t use a mouse!”. Anyway in our profession the typing speed is irrelevant productivity wise. My only regret is that I can’t type without staring at the keyboard – this would save me a lot of annoying little errors.

The narrow specialist in the broad sense of the word is a complete idiot in the narrow sense of the word. Advertise here – minimum three posts per day are guaranteed.

I never learned how to type properly, but using intellisense in vs you never really type full words anyway. The biggest bottleneck in programming is getting the ideas in my head into the pc. It would be great if it could read my mind! (sometimes...)

20 wpm (words per minute).... all are right 60 wpm...mostly spell mistakes Truth is truth we have to accept it....

I taught myself how to type and I found that as I became a professional programmer I just naturally became able to type faster and faster. However, most programmers I know are hunt and peck. While you may be just as good of a programmer, when non-technical people see a programmer one-fingering his or her keyboard it does not inspire confidence. Also, when someone ambushes me in my cube or office it always disturbs them for me to look them in the eyes while we are still talking and I am still typing away. Of course, they can't see the fact that I usually come back and fix the mess I made after they left!

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. When I was in high school they updated the computer labs to 486s, but the only software they put on it was Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. So I took typing class and sat in the same spot in the back of the class every day where I installed and happily coded in Turbo Pascal.

Ah... the good ole days of typing. I believe the young ones call it "keyboarding" these days. At least that's what my kids call it. I learned to type in high school (a long, long time ago) on a manual, non-electric type writer. (Anyone remember those? Hated it when the keys kept getting stuck together because you went too fast). Anyway, I now type at about 75 to 80 words per minute using both hands, all fingers, with very few mistakes. I like to amaze my friends with my ability to type about as fast as they talk. (yeah, I have no life...)
