Microsoft giving away Free Windows Phone to Developers for testing purposes

I wonder if they give one away for trying to hack it to get native code running on it. I'm interested in getting "Directshow Filters for Ogg Vorbis, Speex, Theora, FLAC, and WebM" running on Windows 7 Phone (BTW I have an unreleased version that runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 - 6.5, which I intend to release before Windows 7 Phone is unleashed to customers) I can imagine their reply "Native code running on Windows 7 Phone? That's blasphemy!", but I won't know until I apply.

You're thinking of the Kin. Different product. Windows Phone 7 will have none of the problems that it's predecessors had, nor will it suffer from the same clueless design and marketing strategies. And if you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I need to sell.

No. They canned the Kin project in favour of WinPhone 7.

Not exactly true - they canned the Kin project because they weren't selling (total sales of somewhere around 10,000 units, IIRC). If they'd sold like hotcakes they'd still be around. They were really aimed at different markets, anyway - the Kin targeted kids (teens; at least that was the theory) pretty specifically, while the mainstream phone offering aims at a more generic market. At least that's how I understand it.
