So... (ok, now I read the article): Whereas pure methane is lighter than air, methane loaded with water droplets is much heavier, and thus spreads over the land, mixing with air in the process (and losing water as rain). So: methane is lighter than air. methane mixed with water is heavier. methane mixes with air this mixture then loses water as rain so, now you have methane again, sans water, which is lighter than air. So, what's the problem??? Marc

The Mohorovicic discontinuity is where huge reserves of methane (enough to cause global catastrophe) are. Sure, there might be a lot of methane where oil is found, because it's a by-product of the oil's fermentation, but the article is (probably intentionally) confusing that comparatively tiny amount with the real thing, that's five times deeper.

Because it's a cycle that reoccurs, during which it's being breathed in by creatures that breathe, absorbed by plants and other stuff that can absorb it, and generally mixed in with everything else (through zillions of different chemical reactions). And if you thought the weather was bad without all the additional compression/decompression, temperature fluctuations from massive chemical reactions, and the variation in solar absorption...
