As long as your product key is legal, it doesn't matter whether the download is legal or not.

Except that when security researchers have checked in the past a large fraction of of Warezdows images available for download over P2P had malware pre-installed. Also, at least with XP (not sure about newer versions) that's not entirely true. OEM product keys won't work validate with standard OS images or vice versa. IIRC similar fun is to be found with MSDN vs Upgrade vs Retail as well.

If you search hard enough, you can find a copy of exactly the version you need - with a correct hash value (which is not really a guarantee, but it comes close).

For mainstream versions at least; II(vaguely)RC some OEMs tweak the images in breaking ways for every minor revision of a computer they put out. If only a few hundred to a thousand people have the computer with the image you need it could very well not exist anywhere in warezland.

True as afar as it goes, but once you get away from mainstream images how do you know the source you have for the hash is legit?

My laptop-DELL- stopped booting last Friday- they diagnosed problems and changed Motherboard, ram and hard drive ;P. Now I am here with an empty system, I have a vista CD but it got corrupted. I have the key but not able to find a legal link to download vista to install. If required I may include URGENT PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ;P

            Why not just ask Dell?

It's time for a new signature.

That didn't helped - I tried that before but it point only to pirated versions. I don't know why finding pirated version is easier than looking for genuine one ;P

They should have put the recovery data somewhere on the harddrive. Most laptops, you can simply enter this from the BIOS.

eeeew. In this day and age you'd think they'd offer a download service as well as shipping media.
