Personally, I just wish they would get Win 7 on a decent tablet, with not only touch, but a stylus. I do not want a stripped down toy OS, just full PC Win 7 would be great! Want one many months ago! http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/handheld/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=226300300&cid=RSSfeed_IWK_All[^]

What do you intend to do with it that you need a full fledged OS?

Use it as a computer, maybe? Stripping out functionality, deleting multi-tasking, etc. might be good for cutting production costs and increasing profits, but if I want a crippled computer, I'll break one I already own.

That is exactly my question. What real software do you think is suited for tablet rather than a regular PC? For instance, VS 2010 does not make much sense to be run on a tablet or for that matter excel will be a nightmare to use with touch interface.

Aww, did diddums get stiffed, buying a crock of ipad? You can take the frustration over your stupidity out on me with as many one-votes as you like, though; I've got big shoulders.

Why not? If I want to bring up VS 2010 to adjust a few lines or jot something down that would be great. If I had some serious work to do, I would quickly plug in a USB keyboard and be ready to roll. As in your excel example, not all opperations of excel require large data input, you can have an excel solution that runs with few actual data inputs but still gets a big job done. If you have a real tablet with stylus along with touch, you have all the power of a high powered laptop with the addition of a simple keyboard. Of course, if it built on Windows 7, you already have speech recognition which actually works pretty decently. There are many program I run that I would like to have whereever I go along with the ability to run any of the apps I have written without having to rewrite them in some limited OS toy. Oh yeah, there is also the choice of web browser and full support for Flash and Silverlight. Do not want to forget that you can use any website, not just the ones that special applications have been built to use ;)

While I can appreciate what you want. I think the tablets which most people “want” (rather they decide that they want after they see one) is something which is lightweight and performs some basic functionality really well. iOS or Android is best suited as an OS for optimizing battery life and relatively size of such devices. Both of them by no means are Toy oses (they are full fledged UNIX OSes optimized for that form factor devices). The device you want has some niche market which no one is targeting right now.

Well toys like the iPad and the like have zero value to me as they do not allow to run any software you already have and limitations even in its basic functions. That is what I would expect from a phone, not a tablet. Let's hope some companies out there will see futher than the fad and design useful tablets.
