No wonder we need talent from outside UK, since our British teenagers are all hopeless - they seem to be more happy to be thugs and criminals, and maybe X-factor kind of stuff, but not education or civilisation! Pathetic!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Hell no, I'm not sorry. I'm proud. Honestly, you'd think that we were never teenagers ourselves - the hypocrisy of such a bigoted attitude boggles my mind. So what if one or two teenagers behave badly - let them be dealt with harshly by the full force of the law if they have broken the law. The vast majority of teenagers are well behaved, polite, hard working and civilised and you would do well to remember that. They have a sense of social responsibility and worry for their futures, so doesn't this make your blinkered view pathetic instead?

It's not so different from how every developer of Indian origin is assumed to be a doofus who uses rude ungrammatical text-speak. :)

Yeah but who wants to read that in the subway? (I assume that's the only place anyone would want to read a newspaper)

I'm a male, British teenager. According to the Daily Mail, I should have fifty children, all by different girlfriends. I should apparently have every STD known to the human race, and be actively spreading it around. I should be out drinking every night, dealing drugs to my parents and friends, and swearing at every other person as I break into their houses and take their heirlooms back to my council house which I got from my unemployment benefits. I'm not, none of my friends are, and I hope that tells you everything you need to know about the Daily Mail's view of teenagers.

Well they are aren't they? Only kidding - I know several talented Indian programmers, as well as several not so talented ones. Equally, for every talented English programmer I know, I know 5 or 6 morons of the highest order. All generalisations are counter productive.

Well said. Honestly, if you'd known me as a teenager you'd have thought I'd amount to nothing with my hair, metal t-shirts and denim and leather. Sometimes people forget that they were ever teenagers themselves.

Sounds like we looked the same :-) Yeah, I agree, I feel sorry for people who are that divorced from what it's like to be a kid or a teenager, that they act as if it never happened to them. The whole mall thing locally had me really frustrated, what do they expect kids to do after school ? Why can't they hang with their mates ? Are they part of society too, or not ?

Well, to be fair, they are usually using it to say 'gimme codez - hw do u snd SMS from ASP.NET ?' But yeah, you're right, there is an assumption that Indian devs are inherently clueless, when it's the flow of western money that has created a huge pool of clueless devs in India.

Yeah, it's self evident that people like Nish and Rama are as good as any Western dev, and probably better than most. It's also clear that the ones using the Quick Questions are, by definition, the subset that can't figure out how to do their own work. Starting in the CP forums, is not the same as running a job ad in Bangalore and seeing who shows up.

With how the threads are lined up, it looks like you are talking to yourself. Not only that, but you are giving yourself a compliment and are claiming you are a teen. Or, am I going bonkers? Perhaps it's my old age (25).

A mantra that I hear from several people of my own age, "why don't they do something productive? When I was their age, I didn't hang around on street corners. Why, I was actively involved in sports and the local church and rescuing kittens from trees and helping little old ladies to cross the street whether they wanted to or not." What you never hear is "why, when I was a teenager I spent most of my time trying to chat up girls and being too scared to speak to them if they looked at me, and hanging around at the park until late because we were bored and had nothing to do."

Well they are aren't they? Only kidding - I know several talented Indian programmers, as well as several not so talented ones. Equally, for every talented English programmer I know, I know 5 or 6 morons of the highest order. All generalisations are counter productive.

Thanks. Topics like these tend to really annoy me, to the extent I sometimes have to calm down and think about what I'm writing. The problem I have with viewpoints like the original poster's is that a lot of teenagers who I've met think that most adults hold them. At best, that's breeding resentment between generations; at worst, it's reader-sanctioned ageism. If any newspaper published a steady stream of articles about how the elderly were acting as parasites on the NHS, there'd be an uproar - and rightly so. It would appear though, that it's quite all right for similarly derogatory articles to be published regarding teenagers.

That's because most of the readership aim to achieve this target.

The odd thing. When I modified the post, it linked back to the post I thought I'd replied against. I suspect forum links shenanigans.
