Microsoft asking for my hosting credentials?!?

Is this normal? I have a connect ticket open at Microsoft [^] for their WebMatrix product. There is a comment at the end asking for a temporary password to my hosting provider for a microsoft.com email address - really? I could set up a temporary user for him, but seems very odd to me that such a big company is asking for some credentials. Might as well give him my internet banking logon as well!

Aaron, can you share your credentials with me so we can try this out? Please change them from your regular password to a temporary one, and let us know at baslam at microsoft.com. Thanks!
He wants to verify your settings and configuration. And has asked you to temporarily change your password so he can look into that (so your real password is not revealed). It's not unusual for technical support to ask for stuff like this - I have myself had to webex onto client machines, and have often had admin access on their primary data servers. He's also asked you to email it to him as opposed to posting it there. This is not at all uncommon in my experience.

Don't do it! It's a trick! It's probably a google employee trying to further tighten their grip on everyone's personal information. Need a gun? I can help you hunt him down. :)

Understandable, but I would think Microsoft would have access into the worlds largest hosting company! I have a few free hosting accouts avialable via GoDaddy, so I will set one of them up for MS to do their testing, thus keeping them away from my live websites. Last thing I would want is to make a change to the web.config at the root and stuff up everything!

Yeah, they could have just asked you to send them your exact config details and they could then have reproduced that at their end.

Yes - and the thing with WebMatrix[^]is its a very 'next, next, finish' type product - ie I wouldnt have to ever know what a web.config file is if I didnt want to, or how to FTP my website up, it does the lot. I was quite interested in the stand alone SQL CE engine[^] but alas it didnt work....

That bill has been floating around for years, and has no hope of being co-sponsored. Americans (me included) would rebel and refuse to declare their guns, and besides that it's already been established that it's unconstitutional for the government to "register" firearm owners. It won't get sponsored, much less passed, and everyone in the government knows it.

Believe me, if it had been passed, or there was anything about it in the health care bill, that would have been a lead news story for WEEKS. Like I said, Americans would resist on a large scale.
