Excitement behind Azure

Rather, I must say I observe a lack of excitement, especially here at CP (based on competition entries). Is there really no excitement or I am in wrong crowd?

What's Azure? Sounds like a Mayan word assuring us of destruction in 2012. Actually, I was going to use the joke icon, and then I realized, if someone asked me what Azure is, I would have to mumble something about some Microsoft newfangled thing dealing with the Internet and maybe, but I could be confused, cloud computing. To which I would then be asked, what's cloud computing, to which I would have to reply, some newfangled term for distributing work across many computers all wired up on the Internet. To which I would then be asked, oh, why would I want that. To which I would then reply, I have no freaking idea, unless you were doing some sort of complicated genetic or cancer research, but then, why would you use something so lame as some newfangled Microsoft technology? I was in the same camp as you, but after going along to the Microsoft launch event here in NZ a few months back I can see there are some quite good things you can do with cloud computing. I wouldn't use it myself (currently anyway), but if you ran say a online ticketing website it would be beneficial in that you can ramp up to as many servers as you want/need (budget pending of course) should you know that there is going to be a massive load on your servers at 9am when a particular concert goes up for sale. A local company (www.greenbutton.net[^]) also showed how you can do 3D image rendering for a small price but a lot quicker than any home PC could manage (ie minutes rather than hours) And the other example they gave was a start up company which didnt want to invest $000's of dollars in server hardware, just to have their start up fail and be left with all servers/equipment lying around. Or maybe, Microsoft are just really good at giving a sales ptich....

at the risk of being labelled a heretic, the fact that premier Microsoft related development website largely ignores it (well the members who write the articles do anyway) leads to the conclusion that its a niche aspect that most of us won't ever work on. Ergo...we generally dont care other than "oh thats quite interesting" cheers Bryce

:-D Well I wish I could think of something intelligent to reply with, but I had several beers and a few vodka shots, so my brain is in hibernation mode. Of course I can still use spell check via the google toolbar so unlike that british crossword loving alcoholic, what I post is still reasonably coherent. And I am proud of that. Yes sir, I am proud of that.
