Ramadan is a month of fasting from sunup till sundown, where one abstains from food, bad deeds and bad thoughts. It is supposed to remind us of the hardships of others and therefore remind us of humility. Its also there to teach us patience, a lesson that is always good. Though quite a bit on this forum might find it strange, different or even downright hostile, I still wish everyone of you a Happy Ramadan and I hope that the lessons are not lost on anyone.

I thought the only "happy" thing about Ramadan was the Aïd el-Fitr ?

    Watched code never compiles.

No, don't say that. What he uses is "English". The rest of us are using bastardized versions. In "English" it's alright to say stuff like, "do you life in London?" :-D

I can see how depriving oneself of food for 12-15 hours can definitely lead to bad deeds and bad thoughts. Interesting. Well, I work on 2 and 3 all the time, but I won't do the fasting part. :) Happy Ramadan to you too! Marc

I have some Muslim friends and have attended few "Iftaar"(dinner post sundown) last year and the food was awesome, they deserve it after a very hard fast for average 12hour without even water (considering I can't live without food for couple of hours extra). My best wishes for the holy month.

Thank you and to you too. On a side note, Iftar/Iftaar is Arabic for "breaking the fast". Its also the Arabic word for breakfast.

I know this may not be politically correct, but I wanted to know if duration for fasting is same across the world . Because in India/South Asia, the duration between sunrise and sundown would be around 10 hours whereas in Europe, where I live it would be 16-18 hours depending how north you are. So people here have to fast more? Just curious

No, that's when the real party starts ;) Many consider Ramadan to be a great occasion to do good. Hence people spend more on alms and are extra generous. Indeed, wherever you look you will find "Mawa'ed Alrahman" (The Beneficient's Banquet) where food is served for any who approach.

Yes, you fast in accordance with your local times, so you start with your local sunup until your local sundown. On the flipside, when its winter, you fast far far far less in Europe and Canada. I know from personal experience.

Well, they would fast with the timing of the nearest location that did have a tangible dawn and dusk. IIRC, when we were in Edmonton, Muslims in Yellowknife and Whitehorse would fast according to our local times. I could find out more if you're really that interested.

Happy Ramadan to you as well. Aren't you glad you're not living back in Edmonton. Sunrise is 6AM and sunset isn't till after 9PM. A daily fast of 15 hours will definitely teach one patience. :)

Oh yeah. I'm feeling sorry for my Muslim cousins there. The non-Muslim cousins are probably teasing them like mad now!

Happy Ramadam to you too and I admire the will power you show in order to participate in this festival, I doubt I would be able to do this myself. P.S. How do you acheive the abstaining from bad thoughts part considering Men think about it every sex seconds ;)

Its much easier than you think, though the first can be difficult. We'll see how it goes with my lapband because my post-dusk consumption will be far less than it should be.

You try very hard and in my case, I bite my tongue whilst programming. I refuse to drive during the daylight hours because then I would be likely to commit murder, much less a "bad deed".

Well, other than you thinking about it whilst typing, you should be sent to the same grammar school as DD! :)
