I know this may not be politically correct, but I wanted to know if duration for fasting is same across the world . Because in India/South Asia, the duration between sunrise and sundown would be around 10 hours whereas in Europe, where I live it would be 16-18 hours depending how north you are. So people here have to fast more? Just curious

Yes, you fast in accordance with your local times, so you start with your local sunup until your local sundown. On the flipside, when its winter, you fast far far far less in Europe and Canada. I know from personal experience.

Thank you and to you too. On a side note, Iftar/Iftaar is Arabic for "breaking the fast". Its also the Arabic word for breakfast.

Thanks for the clarification on meaning of Iftaar but I am sure this is not used for the morning food before sunrise, my friends calls it "Sehri"

Ramadan is a month of fasting from sunup till sundown, where one abstains from food, bad deeds and bad thoughts. It is supposed to remind us of the hardships of others and therefore remind us of humility. Its also there to teach us patience, a lesson that is always good. Though quite a bit on this forum might find it strange, different or even downright hostile, I still wish everyone of you a Happy Ramadan and I hope that the lessons are not lost on anyone.

Happy Ramadan to you as well. Aren't you glad you're not living back in Edmonton. Sunrise is 6AM and sunset isn't till after 9PM. A daily fast of 15 hours will definitely teach one patience. :)

Happy Ramadam to you too and I admire the will power you show in order to participate in this festival, I doubt I would be able to do this myself. P.S. How do you acheive the abstaining from bad thoughts part considering Men think about it every sex seconds ;)

How would Muslims within the Arctic circle cope if Ramadan fell within the months when the sun never sets or never rises?

Well, they would fast with the timing of the nearest location that did have a tangible dawn and dusk. IIRC, when we were in Edmonton, Muslims in Yellowknife and Whitehorse would fast according to our local times. I could find out more if you're really that interested.

Its much easier than you think, though the first can be difficult. We'll see how it goes with my lapband because my post-dusk consumption will be far less than it should be.

You try very hard and in my case, I bite my tongue whilst programming. I refuse to drive during the daylight hours because then I would be likely to commit murder, much less a "bad deed".

I have some Muslim friends and have attended few "Iftaar"(dinner post sundown) last year and the food was awesome, they deserve it after a very hard fast for average 12hour without even water (considering I can't live without food for couple of hours extra). My best wishes for the holy month.

Believe it or not, I have some of Rick Stein's recipes waiting for me to tackle them. He's paint drying but he can certainly cook fish. I wouldn't mind a proper Fish & Chips these days but at the moment, I'll happily kill for a glass of ice cold water. And a happy one to you as well :)

er....[Thinks]...Got it! It is part of my project to bring the word 'Life' into mainstream communication as a verb. (v) Life. To make one's choice of permanent home and adopt the customs and culture of where one lives. Example David chose to life himself in Luton. :)

So it's a transitive version of to live? I like it. I life my canary in a big cage. NASA lifes some astronauts in the ISS English has been missing such a verb for a long time I second the usage of this word!

Happy Ramadhan Mustafa. We have a fast of around 13 hours here in Pakistan and I don't think it is much of a problem for the majority. ;P
