HTC Desire

Anyone here having one? Everywhere I read, i get to see rave reviews. I really want a good smartphone and looked at Samsung GalaxyS[^] and the Motorola Milestone XT720[^] but both did not appeal too much to me. Looks like the Desire launch is a few days off, and I'm seriously thinking of buying one when it does. Just wanted to gather opinion if anyone here has one. Thanks.

Have you compared it to the newest iPhone? I have the iPhone 3G and it's pretty sweet... I'm sure the newest iPhone is even better. I'm not sure how it compares to the HTC Desire though.

i've had one for a couple of months now (unlocked UK version) and after you switch of all the background crap and make the battery last 36+hrs it absolutely rocks ... seriously the best phone i've had (after a string of WinMo & Nokia phones) hth :)

iPhone is out of the equation. It's much more expensive in India compared to the ones listed. And all that extra is only for of the Apple brand, feature wise it does not offer anything more compared to Android phones. I also personally do not prefer Apple products. The only one I've bought till date is the iPod and that too only because my Alpine CDA 9887 has native support only for the iPod and no other player. :( I'm not staunchly against them, it's only that I don't perceive their products as being value for money.

Just gone one and been very pleased with it so far. Haven't tried writing an app for it yet (no time) but read through the docs and looks simple enough. On the whole very impressed, the only downside (apparently they're bringing out a new revision at some point) is the screen is more or less unreadable in bright sunlight. But to be honest most phones will suffer from that fate (particularly touch phones). Been playing with the Navigation and been pretty fun - routes as Google does but haven't tried "altering" the default route yet. Used it today and started off on the "wrong" route to avoid traffic I knew would appear and it corrected itself once it decided I'd past the point which was quicker to turn around and go back.
I doubt it. If it isn't intuitive then we need to fix it. - Chris Maunder

Sweet to hear. Thanks. :) I went looking for it today, only to be told that the launch has been postponed to sometime end of this month. :( I need a phone fast, my Sony Ericsson K750i is 5 years old now and the audio quality is terrible of late.

Sounds good. Thanks. :) Once I get one, I'm sure I'll be having a lot of fun using the GPS here. Cities here are GPS device's nightmare come true.

I've had mine for 10 days (last phone was an iPhone 3G) and I love it. The customisation support - namely the widgets - did it for me. I have all the apps I need and the Android Market isn't as bad as I feared. There aren't as many games, but that wasn't high on my list. The phone itself is lush - the screen is superb, and I like the fact I can upgrade the microSD card (mine came with a 4Gb, just upgraded to a 16Gb for £20.) Plus I can change the battery if I want. The battery life isn't great, but then I have everything turned on, and it seems to be comparable to my old iPhone 3G. The 7 home screens on my phone are totally widget-fied. I have a calendar on one, the Friend Stream (all recent FB and Twitter posts) on another, the very cool HTC weather/time widget (which shows the weather for your current location), a oage of favourite contacts (thumbnail pictures of each), an RSS feed showing BBC News and finally I have a page containing live train times to/from work (I paid £5 for that app and it's worth every penny.) It's a seriously good phone and I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you get one.

I've had mine for 3 months now (O2UK) and I still can't put it down. It does everything I want and more, looks great and I'm still finding new stuff for it. I couldn't resist and rooted mine, so I'm now running a custom ROM based on Android 2.2 Froyo. Which if you have the confidence to do, opens up a whole new world of customisation and development opportunities for the device. Battery life isn't great, but there's enough there to make up for that. Best phone I've ever owned. -W

I have the HD2 with win mobile and it's gestures leave a lot to be desired, the interface can be quite painful. I would not recommend a window mobile OS.

Desire is popular in my office, but the Galaxy S is better technically. Better screen and faster processor (possibly just on the vector/gaming side) Played with both, Galaxy S is still my first choice. Don't like the 'hard' buttons, and the desire is prettier, but the screen on the S is really excellent. Desire should get the upgrade to 2.2 Froyo first, which is a good thing, Samsung can be pretty slow to upgrade their devices. If you can wait the equivalent of the latest Motorola Droid, so not the xt720, the Droid X[^]. Don't know what its non-US name will be or when it will arrive but it looks damn good.

I am using Nexus One, bought from US and using it in India from March 2010. Desire and Nexus One are same configuration (Hardware) except Desire has FM radio app. Desire is running the HTC Touch Flow which makes the Home Screen cool. One thing you should consider, the hardware supports (both Desire & Nexus One) only two finger touch whereas Samsung Galaxy S supports more than two (useful on gaming). Check the multi-touch issues of Desire & Nexus One. You can find more videos on Youtube. Two touch is OK for me. So, I can live with my own Nexus One.
