MSN Messenger

Hey everyone, I've been using MSN Messenger for ages now, and even more so lately to keep in touch with friends far away from my university (i.e. all my friends from before, basically), and wondered if anyone knew if and when version five was coming out for XP? I've already downloaded the MSN Messenger version but the Windows Messenger version (targetted at XP( is still at V4.7. On a wider note, what does everyone think of instant messaging? I think it's a really good way to keep in touch with people, especially if you're of the right mind to use it I guess (e.g. I wouldn't use it to keep in touch with someone who was pretty much computer illiterate 'cause waiting for them type messages would be, well, painful :)). -- Andrew.

Ouch - that's not good. I've had pretty good luck with the service up to now, apart from the odd outages but to be fair it's not been too bad here. -- Andrew.

I like the idea - it's much faster when you're working with a far-flung group and need to get an answer quickly, without waiting for everyone to read their email. But i have some problems with most of today's popular clients. Logging is probably the biggest one - AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! do not save previous chat sessions, something that becomes invaluable when you're exchanging detailed information. Thankfully, both Trillian and Sonork *do* log, so if i can keep them around i'll be happy. Shog9 ------
Rather hammer futiley at the locked door than just sit and ignore it. Obviously finding a way to get through the locked door would be even better though. - Paul Watson, My Ignorance

Good point. I don't really have the need to save conversations after they've taken place since I usually just use them to chat to friends, but there is a Save option in MSN, or you can just copy all the stuff to Word. -- Andrew.

I still think Sonork has got it right. The whole 'Drop a line' functionality is a main drawback to MSN IM. As in you can type a message to an offline user any they will collect it when they connect. The main problem with Sonork is the user base! All of my friends use MSN/Trillian. So I am forced to use it too to keep in contect. As far as IM goes? I think it will be around for a lot longer. It has great potential and is far superior to email for a quick message, and is also superior to java based chatrooms because they are full applications and can do so much more.
The Internet, whats that? Is it a car?

I haven't been able to log on for two days now, I seem to remember trying last week and having the same problem also. The website is down also, which is obviously the problem. Try Messenger Plus! Extension[^]. It's an add-on for the MS Messenger. Besides other helpful features such as removing that annoying ad banner, it logs all your chat sessions. Regards Thomas Sonork id: 100.10453 Thömmi

I love IM. I'm working in England, but am from South Africa, so this way I can stay in touch with all friends and family back home. Also I have lots of old Aussie, Kiwi & Canadian friends from when I used to backpack, and we now use IM rather than emailing all the time to stay in touch. It's a life changer! If spam does start coming through I will be seriously hacked off however. X|

Me too - for me it's literally made the difference between having the support I've needed to survive and struggling to cope on my own. Now that things are starting to settle down for me it's nice just to be able to chat to friends around the world.
