Guys, I was listening to the LBC 97.3 this evening, and i came to know about one piece of legislation in this country that is shameless and stinking. The is apparently called squatter's law/rights, whereby a person could just get into anybody's house, lets say when the residents had gone out for a little shopping for an hour or so, and can claim ownership and live there, and the owners / legal residents there cannot do anything about it, other than to go to court to evict the squatters out the premises!!!! We british always moan about people coming into this country, and we paint them all with the same brush as illegal or stealing jobs fom us, and costing our NHS a lot etc, irrespective of the fact that these lelga immigrants might be ading value to this country and go about minding their own business. Now compare that to squatter rights, and one of the advocate in that program says this is a very usual thing that happens in Britain, and day in and day out this happensm and legal owners will have to spend 10s of thousands of pounds to get the squatters out of the property, via court. I wonder why we have a law that allows British people to let do illegal tresspass into other's houses, and say sorry we can;t do anything about it, please go to court and get them out!!!! Just so you know... if you leave for work in the morning, and when you get back home, you can expect squatters in your home, and not allow you to come in, until you go to court to take them out. From what the advocate said in the program, I believe the squatters break in, and change the lock, and that is it! They can;t be touiched by police or whoever! Shameless British law!!!!! If we let this continue, no one will have any intention to work and earn, they will simply move into other's houses as they wish.

Hmmm in that case you might want to use proper words too - "didn't" is no proper English word. We can go on and on about this. Forget it!
Didn't you learn English as a child? Didn't is a perfectly cromulent word. Contraction of Did Not. I Haven't wasted your time have I? :)

I don't think it was the police that helped your situation there, it might have been the "some muscle-bound friends" that did the trick to sort out things there :)

It was a breaking news for me, and from teh answers from some here, i can see it was a breaking news for many here. Now, it is a shameful matter for us British, irrespective of whether it is breaking news or not!

I'm reasonably sure I've seen similar laws in a few places. Generally applied to vacant and/or abandoned properties which no one is taking care of. If someone moves in and actually takes care of it it winds up belonging to them. That said, breaking and entering or trespassing are crimes most anywhere, so I've never understood how in the blazes these laws managed to work. Though thinking about it, the law will probably side with whoever pays taxes to them that year.

Here[^] take a look at the 'What you can and can't do' section. It could happen as code_wiz suggests. As far as damaging the property to gain access part goes the good old 'A big boy did it and ran away' defence often works because as far as the police are concerned it becomes a 'he said, she said' situation. With no certainty of a conviction and the civil law available the police will often opt for the path of least resistance.

As I recall someone can only squat* in an empty (unoccupied) house. *Is it me, or does "squat" seem a ridiculous name?

It does happen. I don't think it happens often, in that way, probably rarely. Squatting is however a big problem and people have been granted ownership of properties after squatting in them for a period, 12 years I think.
