Nikon announces the D3100

I knew it! (I have an iPhone - hangs head in shame). :) To be serious I doubt that I'll get another iPhone when the contract expires. It's a very nice phone but I'm not sure it lives up to all the fuss and furore.

My ATT contract ended in July so I can theoretically get a new phone, but like you I don't want another iPhone. Maybe a Droid or a Windows 7 phone.

Barely a year after the D3000 was released, they have now released its successor - the D3100. It's the first Nikon DSLR with 1080 HD video capturing capabilities. http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25472/D3100.html[^] Other highlights : 14.2 Megapixel cmos sensor 11-point AF system ISO now goes up to 3200 (rated) and 12800 (unrated) I don't think I am interested though. I am awaiting the D90-successor or maybe even the D300s successor. But anyone planning to buy a D5000 now, don't! The D3100 is supposedly at a lower bracket but is actually a way better camera.

It's not that we are here in full strength; we just don't like to see the Nikon guys wasting their money.

That's a great zoom lens. It and the 24-70 f/2.8L get a lot of use on my camera.

You can't do this to us, Nish. I feel like it was only yesterday I bought by D200. There's no way my wife is letting me get one of these...
Well my timing sucked even more than yours. I bought the D40x and 4 weeks later the D60 was announced which dropped 40x prices by 200 bucks. I bought the D80 an year or so later a month and half before Nikon announced the D90. So this time I will wait for a new model to come out before I waste** money on it ** Smitha's word for me spending money on Nikon equipment.

I did the same as well. I bought the D300 only to find out a month later, here's the D300s (with video). :( I wish they'd let you know when good stuff was coming out before they announce it. ;-)

They keep it secret to delay the inevitable price drop on the soon-to-be obsolete model.

That looks like a cheap piece of junk; but I suppose cannon users wouldn't know any better. Nikon fanbois have stuff like this to slobber over: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-200-500mm-Ultra-Telephoto-Nikon-Cameras/dp/B0013DAPNU/ref=cm_lmf_tit_16[^]

I've been a lover of Nikon all my proffesional life. And frankly, I also snubbed my nose at Canon. (Notice the passed tense) Recently my sister purchased a Cannon PowerShot and I have to tell you that I was blown away! One advantage it has is the reduction of motion blur. I did some research and found that it got an average rating: "9 out of 10" on all the camera sites. What am I doing on here talking about cameras when I've got work to do? Sure I'm my own boss but I could still fire myself like Ennis Ray Lynch is about to do. (Ask him for yourself)

My Articles Developer's Best FriendYeah, Canon does make better digital cameras than Nikon (non-SLR). I have myself owned a Canon PowerShot A70 several years back. I have also gifted later models to my sister, sister-in-law, parents etc.

Seriously, when Amazon's discount is like 24% and you save like $9,000 on it. You better be using that lens to put food on the table or just have money to blow. Btw, if its the later, buy me a D3X kit. It's just chump change anyways... :-D

Indeed...would have saved me a bunch on my current model. Or at least, I would have opted for the D300s. I wouldn't mind having the extra feature of video. Even if it was crappy video, another bell/whistle doesn't hurt right?

The D400 is rumoured to come out later this year. It will certainly have better ISO capabilities and will also most likely have the 1080 video. Unless a D90 successor is released around the same time, I will certainly be considering that camera (will have some serious wife-convincing to do of course).

i've noticed that the pictures i take with my D90 are pretty much just as good as the pictures i took with my old N60. and my N80. and my D100.

Yeah, but the D90 will let you take some pics that may not have been possible with the older cameras. I am thinking of serious low light situations that require ISO 3200.

N60...It was my first SLR camera. I've still got it sitting right next to my D300. Granted, I don't think I'll ever take another picture on it, when compared to my D300.

If I had the money and time, I'd be on the market for some camera supplies. As for now, its a hobby I pickup when I get inspired for some cool shot. In fact, if I wasn't a programmer, I would have loved to have taken up photography full time.
