While this is California, I'm many years too late for it to be legal. Plus I love my wife, and she would leave me. :^) And the kids, I love them, too.

Isn't East LA one big range? You don;t even have to stop the car! Iain.

I only own one flack jacket and brain pan protector, I'd need more hardware than I own, plus the kids aren't bird trained yet, so I'd have to retrieve my own.

I don't want the kids getting gun shy, and when the first time involves people shooting back, that happens.

Vandenberg. I took a handgun safety class somewhere in/around Van Nuys, but I don't remember where.

I appreciate the suppestion. I'm not that far NW of LA, just on the Ventura border. There used to be one in Northridge, but they seem to have stopped answering their phone. :sigh:

And you know how they chew up the birds if they aren't trained for it... :-D

Does anyone know a good range north west of LA? I'd like to "programme" some time at one with my kids.

I hope he was sleeping on the couch for a while! On the other hand, it looked a little staged. In my experience, practical jokes never end up well.

Ruger 10/22, a pearl handled, engraved Browning HP I inherited from my Dad and a S&W 357, but it's been so long since I checked I don't remember the model number (travelling now, so I can't check). I doubt there are any outdoor ranges nearby (Vandenburg is an hour+ away), and most indoor don't allow 5.56 unless they are military, in my experience, so I'm probably out of luck for the mini-14.

I almost bought a Mini-14, but the siren call of the EBR penetrated my brain. Besides, I'm not a fan of Ruger (due to the company owner's politics and the people that evangelize the brand to the point of just plain pissing me off). I'm sure they make nice firearms, but they're's no such thing as a manufacturer that's "all that and a bag of chips" (to put it into a L.A. vernacular). :)

My owning two Rugers is not a 'political statement'. Got the 10/22 at 17, used an M-14 at school & loved it, almost skipped a month's rent to buy one in 84/85. Real one, selective fire, with the lock, 1100 Still required the license, as it was convertable, and I just couldn't swing the $500. If all (any) of my investments had appreciated as much as that one would have,I'd be retired now. The mini being about a fifth the price, IIRC, I was able to buy it in IOBC, when I got the S&W, as well. Nobody I've heard in LA would say "and a bag of chips". They might say "and a bag of crap", though :) Makes you wonder about their eating habits.

But who wants to but a full share in a 1/10th acre lot end have it cost your yearly income? I just want to rent it in half hour increments.

It was not meant to be offensive or smart. Where I live, there's a gun club or shooting range every third mile, so getting acquainted with, and asking help of, the local sheriff and/or police department just comes naturally.
