Not long ago I was watching The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans[^]. The movie started with an age rating like most modern movies: "12". :wtf: 12 ! Did the person rating this movie even see it? Imdb (or Cara[^]) rates it "R", which is better, but even then. I still can't believe that in todays society they don't have a better and more objective rating system. What's your opinion on this?

Is there any nudity and/or sexual references (other than the prostitute mentioned in the plot) ? I find that the USA tend to be schizophrenic about what it consider "bad" when they censor movies. I was watching the latest (horribly bad) "Rambo" on the TV the other day and they censored out all swear words even while they (graphically) killed and murdered people at the same time (but if you turn on the sub-titles, you can most of the time read them!).

      Watched code never compiles.

Finally someone has figured out how to mention boobs and nipples in the Lounge without breaking any rules. Take a 5 from me, sir! :-D

A bare bottom is an abomination against god, but it is ok to see 300 murders a day on TV. I don't get american censorship.

In the states, the movie ratings aren't quite so age-related. G - general audiences (ie anyone) PG - "parental guidance" is suggested for children under 10 PG-13 - parental guidance is suggested for children under 13 R - restricted; under 17 requires presence of parent or guardian NC-17 - No one under 17 is allowed The PG-13 rating came about because of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Given a choice between PG and R, the Movie Ratings Board chose PG. The religious right screamed about the violence, so a new rating was created to fill the perceived gap. NC-17 used to be X; it was replaced when X was adopted by the porn industry to mean "dirty movie." There actually were legitimate, mainstream movies released in the US with an X rating, including A Clockwork Orange and Last Tango In Paris.

Only constantly :-). The entire movie is about sex, drugs, violence and corruption and making it look good and cool.

You should watch "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" which is about the ratings board. It is absolutely fascinating. The best thing that can be said about the ratings board is that it was created in order to keep the government out of censoring films, but it is so secretive and their decisions so arbitrary that it defies explanation.

The imdb rating for this movie, is 7.00 which is a relatively poor rating.

                      best regards.

What? You only want to see the bottom half of the scene? I can understand that Riverdance - the movie wouldn't be affected, but you'd miss out so much in films like Alien.

There isn't really an age associated with PG; these days it just means it's not exclusively targeted at little kids. PG-13 is more like R but with an age of 13 instead of 17: kids under 13 are supposed to only get in with a parent. Not that movie theaters enforce any of it. And NC-17 is still treated as poison by movie theaters, which was what they were trying to avoid when they changed it from X. Virtually nothing comes out as NC-17, and nothing that's mainstream, which is too bad.

I still laugh at the furore when someone found a hidden and highly pixelated sex scene in one of the Grand Theft Auto games. All the people coming out of the woodwork to say they'd never have bought their son / grandson the game if they'd known about it.

Based on the trailer, it looks suitable for "me when I was 12" to me. I wouldn't have liked it, but that's not what the ratings are for. Reasons: - no nudity as far as I can see - no horror - no excessive gore - violence/drugs/references to sex/etc aren't going to scare many 12 year olds Here's the best rating system: have the parents watch the trailer and judge what their kid can handle, not all kids are the same. edit: of course if there is more nudity in the film then the trailer shows it would instantly have to be 18+.

*shrugs* I had parents who didn't even let me watch PG films. I wasn't allowed to watch titanic when I was something like 17. On the other hand nearly everyone I knew was allowed to watch whatever they wanted even at primary school.

It's not about scaring, it's about education and what is appropriate.

But movies are for entertainment, right?

Our primary school principal approved and promoted the showing of The Blue Lagoon at the school's weekly Saturday afternoon movie.  He did, however, send parents a circular first, explaining his motive that it was about love and not about nudity or sex.

If I was 11 years old, I'd swap a dozen blood and gore movies for a 3 minute topless video. :-D

                                          Regards, Nish

For 11 year olds, I don't think a topless video even needs to be 3 minutes long. :)
