I once fixed this issue for my neighbor. There was a switch on the bottom front of her laptop that enabled/disabled wireless.

Yeah, I looked for that, no such luck on this model.

If DD touches her front bottom, he really, really will be in trouble. With Michelle, if with no-one else.

I have spent 6+ hours attempting to sort out a friends laptop. Removed tons of crap, ran a scan that took 2 hours and had loads of spyware, defragged, and generally cleaned up the whole thing. Now down to my last two probs. Firstly, cannot get the wireless to switch on. The Fn Key works, I can adjust brightness etc, and the F2 works, but the wireless will not turn on. I have checked the hardware manager and it confirms that it is there, got the drivers and working perfectly, I just can't switch on. Is there any way of turning it on via the os (Vista - puke)?

I had a laptop that occasionally would switch bands (frequencies, whatever), making the wireless useless. That's another idea. Marc

Then it's switched off at the h/w layer. There has to be a switch somewhere, have a good grope and see what you can find. Or ask Dr Google?

I have googled! (I googled before asking here, for I figured there may be something obvious) I have groped and inspected and can say there is definitely no buttons to be poked.

Had that happen too. Basically, if I squeezed the case on the laptop in a certain way, I could get the LED to light up for a while. Eventually I gave up fighting the mechanical nightmare of the switch and ended up buying a USB wireless dongle. Marc

Who would have thought you had to have the numlock on! I have no reason to understand why this should be so, but apparently if you have the numlock on you turn the wireless adapter on and off at the hardware level, and if it is off it is switched at the os level. So having the numlock on, then switching off the adapter, when the numlock is off you cannot turn it on at all. What fuckwit thought of this? Anyway, Henry, you are my hero, and I shall build a shrine and sacrifice a toblerone to you!

Who's the ass-hat HW mfg of the POS you're dealing with? I want to be sure to avoid them. This whole thread is reminiscent of the Lenovo g3000 series I had to fix for a friend - wireless not turning on was a flaky BIOS problem.... about drove me nuts trying to figure it out. The best part: Lenovo essentially said, "nuts." took months before they even considered it a problem worth investigating - and I never did hear if they produced a BIOS fix, after they did confirm that it was indeed the BIOS... D.

If it's a Dell, it wouldn't hurt to check in the BIOS' SETUP program (F2 at POST) if the keyboard shortcut is enabled. It also lets you enable WiFi from there, I think.
