The program in the title is running on my PC running Windows 7. (My XP machine is also a Dell, but doesn't have this program...) Anyway, the said program is taking up 50% of my CPU. Earlier, I'd left one user logged on and switched over to another user. That user took up 50% of the CPU running Dell.ControlPoint.exe as well. Needless to say, the whole machine slowed down to crawling pace. I do wonder what will happen if I stick a 3rd user on the PC... Anyway, the point is, what the hell is Del..ControlPoint.exe and what's it doing clogging up my CPU usage?

Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

If it came from the people who sold you your PC, it's almost certainly designed to make it 'easier to use' and is therefore a waste of time and needs to be evicted from your electronic kingdom.

exe names can be googled often resulting in good information: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Dell.ControlPoint.exe[^] I am sure if you buy an HP machine, it won't have any software with "Dell" in it's name, so no you don't need it. You may be interested in the Systinternals Autoruns tool and disable the things you don't like. :)

Well, I certainly didn't put it there, so I am inclined to do as you suggest. Strange how it hadn't affected me till this morning... Thanks.

Thanks. I did poke around Google myself but couldn't find anything all that interesting. Anyway, it looks like ControlPoint is for doing things like power management on laptops. My PC is a desk top. Hmmm... O well, let's see about getting rid of it, then... ;)

1: Buy new PC. 2: Wipe and install own version of [insert OS]. Works every time.

We buy quite a lot of Dell PC's here and they keep arriving with an ever increasing raft of Dell spamware on them. Control point is one of them and we have had numerous issues with it doing things like breaking the wifi on laptops every few hours etc. I would highly recommend uninstalling it.
