Connectivity in South Africa

My son and daughter-in-law (from the UK) are currently in South Africa for a 5-week stay, firstly in Johannesburg and later in Durban. He has an Android phone (UK Orange network). I would welcome suggestions on the most cost-effective way for him to obtain internet connectivity for all (or part of) the period. Suggestions of what they could do while they are there are not necessary - their time is already more than fully occupied! Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil I Live in South Africa,Cape Town and currently im using nokia E72. My connectivity is MTN and CellC. My best recommendation MTN-3G,they have Data Bundles which don't cost that much depending on your consumption.The reason is MTN-3G is very fast and im happy with it. I Hope this help. M.Paige

The easiest is probably 'pay-as-you-go'. AFAIK, the value paid can be used for calls or data. Latter might require an extra procedure (activation or something).

Hi Phil, Both of the previous suggestions are your best bet, Pay-As-You-Go is relatively cheap here. One concern they forgot to mention is that a new law bought into effect in the country is RICA. Basically this is a act to prevent people using cellular phones for fraud and requires that any reciepient confirms their identity when purchasing a contract or pre-paid. I'm sure if they show their passport or some such it won't be an issue but just make them aware of it. FYI prepaid and the RICA authentication process are pretty much available anywhere: shopping centers, cell shops even some corner stores so they should have no hassle getting a pack.
