Anyway you asked for some points on why XP is good so I gave mine.

I try to tell my friends which Windows is most stable, and I say XP is not. They say yes, XP is the most stable Windows. .NET Magazine even think the same I do (here they talk about security, but anyway): Remember, Microsoft also promised that Windows XP was the most secure operating system it had ever shipped—and then days later a devastating vulnerability was discovered that was far worse than any previous hole in a Windows operating system So my debate here is about: I want You to tell me if I'm wrong and motivate Why? I also want you to tell me which Windows You say is the most stable? (if you say XP I'll kick ya ass;P) Okay, XP may cause lesser blue-screens, but that doesn't make XP the best and most stable Windows of them ALL! We can exclude these Windows versions: Win 95 Win ME (blue-screen ME) Win 98 Let's dabate about these Windows versions: Win NT (all versions) Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows .NET Server Win 98 SE

So get ready now to write many convincing words!

A quick question first: which of those operating systems have you used exhaustively in your day to day work? :~

But then if you count this against XP then really, come on. BMWs suck cause they come in pink  Just get a nicer skin, watercolor is brilliant. It is basically W2K look, but with a softer, slimmer feel.

So based on a single day's inexhaustive use you are conclusively arguing against Windows XP? Grab the trial edition and isntal it on a a computer at home (or a friends if you don't have one yourself) and use it for at least a week, then come back and try arguing as you have been again. In answer to your question, the most stable version of Windows is currently Windows .NET Server as it has not been yet released. The next most stable in my eyes is Windows XP. Stability wise it is a great improvement over Windows 2000. In response to something you originally quoted: "and then days later a devastating vulnerability was discovered that was far worse than any previous hole in a Windows operating system" Hey? They/you are trying to pass a broken nail off here as a reason for whole-arm amputation. The potential impact on a small scale could ahve been damaging, but the problem was resolved. The problem in itself was no more significant than any other.

I've never had XP on any box I've worked with, but I think that 2000 is best (compared to 98, NT, and the "other OSes". Reasons why I think 2000 is better than them all: less crashes/problems. 98 had some issues, and NT (at work) seems to be fine (then again, I only ever do development on it). I push my 2000 through the paces (3d games, dev, etc), and I haven't seen a blue screen, a STOP screen, or "wtf? why did it just reboot on me?" ever. (OK, well, I saw a STOP screen when I tried using a bad stick of RAM, but that's just me being stupid). No opinions on XP since I have no personal experience with it. you want stable? DOS. ;P That's why I ramble so much. If you're short and quotable, there's a much greater danger of ending up in a sig. [Christopher Duncan on how to prevent yourself from ending up in a sig]

To simplistic of a question. For myself I have been happiest with 2000. For the games my son plays (sorry but true) 98 has been much better than any of the others (never tried the combination with any XP) So any with bogus program loads and bad device drives will not work well. I've found Windows 2000 to be the most stable OS that I've used, I've been running Pro on my machine for over a year now, and have done stacks of installs/uninstalls of apps, drivers, etc, and it is still running like a charm. Can't comment about XP, I have not used it for any length of time, I think the cutesy interface put me off. (I always used the 'classic' theme) Before that was Windows 98 SE, which was by far the most stable 9x based Windows OS I've used. I'm proud to say that I never tried Win ME ;P
