All USB Cabkles are not Equal

I had couple of Usb drives and couple of External drives. They got mixed together. what this means is that UsB2.0 external drive will ONLY WOrk with USB 2.0 Cable- those that have Ferrites in them. I ended up buying 2 TB drive( Segate- freeagent) in the process. The old drive is perfectly working with USB 2.0 cable. So the moral of the story- Check your USB Cable for Ferraites- if you want USB 2.0 operation. Cheers

It is true that all USB cables are not equal (some are more equal than others :) ), but Ferrite sleeves are far from the only factor. Ferrite sleeves are primarily concerned with interference to and from external devices (ie not just those on the ends of the cable in question.) It's a very complex issue series of issues. Can of worms, anyone? :-D If you find a combination of cable and device that works reliably, hang on to it (or even, shock horror) attach a label.

Hey, in my large box of assorted USB cables (at least 4 different B end connector styles!), there's not a single label. AND, most of them are black. ;P

Thats ok then! HTC put an end to my label free usb's as my mobile phone cable came with a label on it. My random RJ45 cable box has 1 cable with a label, and thats because it is a crossover. Again, i didn't attach, it came with it...

Ok, so I loose lots of man points: All my cables are labeled - at both ends. My SCART leads are labled (Video, DVD, MediaHub, Sky), my mains plugs are labled (Toaster, food processor, slow cooker, etc). I have a label printer just to do it. If a cable fails, I cut it in half before binning it, so it doesn't get "rescued". It may be anally-retentive, but it saves a lot of time when there is a problem, even a minor "not plugged in" problem. ;P
Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.

Probably is - it like packing when you move house. You soon learn it's a good idea to write a contents list on the box when you fill it, so you stand a chance of finding the coffee/wine/corkscrew when you arrive... :laugh:

It's nothing to do with the ferrites, it's cable resistance.
