I have a good friend who works in the weapons training facility at the Canadian Forces Base near my home. I had the privilege of touring the base with him, trying out the simulators and, sadly, eating the rations. They come cold, with some chemicals that heat the provisioned water to boiling to re-heat the "meat". You have to save some of the water if you want the coffee, but it wasn't clear on how to warm that up. You boil the pack of meat/sauce to a just-above-cool temperature and dig in. It doesn't look great, but it actually tastes okay. It probably would've tasted better if I didn't get some of the chemical-laden boiled water in my grub. It is way more effort than I'd have thought. Also, my cookies were all broken up.

When I was in the US Marines I ate MRE's all the time in the field. I was in from 1984 - 1992 and the MRE's were dated from the late 1970's. Most of these types of rations are freeze dried and/or dehydrated. You have to reconstitute them with alot of water or you'll get dehydrated. As far as taste, the newer one's were ok. The older MRE's were renamed "Meals Rejected Vt Etheopians" for a good reason - they were REALLY bad.

We (U.S.) used to have the Canadians beat with our C-rats. They even came with cigarettes! I think MREs were the politicos punishment for the loss in VietNam.

Wow - the British one has certainly come a looong way...no "biscuits fruit" or "biscuits brown AB"....the AB (allegedly) standing for Anal Blockage....eat the ABs to bung yourself up, then the chuggies (*laxatives*) to "restore normal function"....and a NAPKIN...what's up with that... Good to see the creamer's still there....good for signal flares that stuff ;)
C# has already designed away most of the tedium of C++.
