It's a pretty stupid thing to do, but it's completely legal. It's a great way for them to say "Hey everyone, we're a bunch of bigoted #(%*&@#s!" Now, I want to see an event where they take the "holy" texts of every religion they can find (Don't want to leave anyone out!) and burn them all in the same bonfire. The message would be "Look, they're all just books." Actually, that would probably be misinterpreted as militant atheism... Hmm... Ok, let's see... Ok, new idea. Take all of those "holy" texts... Print a new book that interleaves the pages... One page of the bible, one page of the koran, one page of whatever else, and so on... Sort them randomly (But no repeats!) just to make sure it's fair. We'll call it... uh... Alright, that was the end of the idea, so someone else has to think of a funny name for it.

In this day and age, I agree, an unfair comparison. However this sort of language, in the thirteenth century, could well have been considered as 'hate speech': Starting with sura 9:73 "Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate." ...or you may prefer sura 9:123 "Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that god is with the righteous." ...or blunt and to the point, sura 2:190 "Slay them wherever you find them." There are several hundred others, equally questionable with regard to moral intent. Of course, if you were to read Deuteronomy or Leviticus, you will find some truly appalling stuff.

However, burning a book will not remove the meme from a person's mind. Only education will do that, and my observation is that religious communities seem remarkably reluctant to provide a broad education, particularly in scientific subjects.

You don't seem to get it, Muslim hardliners would probably love to have me, the atheist, shot. Am I running around screaming how evil they are? Nope, because I'm a far better person than they, or you, are. I can live quite happily over here, and unless they decide to actively screw with me I don't particularly care what they're jumping up and down about. Burn a flag, what do I care? Start telling people they should be run out of their own country because they disagree with you? Then I start taking pot shots at idiots to remind people that they're still idiots. If they start to actually succeed I will actually do something about it it, I do have a decent sized soap box I can rant off of, or I can give it to someone far more eloquent than myself with my full backing. If someone comes around to kill me, they best hope they get it right real quick. Because the last few idiots who decided to rough me up received extremely unpleasant surprises, and that's a few classes under 'kill the heretic' responses. But you know what? The Muslims I've known haven't killed anyone, the ones I've talked to have felt completely powerless to stop the idiots who say they're going to kill us all. And you know what? They're pretty much right, we've fed a machine to produce insurgents to oppose our enemies, and then we ditched them.
