One week ago today I was on holiday in Devon, and spending the day on Blackpool Sands beach. I assume the sands bit is some sort of Devonish joke as there is none there and it is bloody painful to walk on. However, to try to amuse my 4 year old daughter I bought a kite from the beach shop for 3 pounds, a single string jobby - looked like a parrot. In the most part it sailed without incident except for one occasion when it dove from the sky and struck a woman walking innocently towards the cafe / shop area. I apologised and got it up again (fnarr). After lunch we had another go at flying the kite, and after some time it again made a dive for the ground, this time its victim saw it coming and jumped out of the way. She then started to shout "Twice! That's twice" as I realised it was the same woman as the first time and attempted to make further apology. This situation was not helped by my mother shouting out (in between fits of laughter) "It's the same woman". I had failed to realise at the time this was some sort of portent for the fate of the planet.

so fitting. I'm currently reading "The Hammer of God" by Arthur C. Clarke; not finished yet, so I don't know if it going to miss or not.
Watched code never compiles.

The reason they can't give an exact number is that there isn't one. Re-entry speed, angle of approach (to the atmosphere), composition, shape, angular momentum all contribute to the burnup rate and the likelihood of fragmentation (fragments burn faster).

.........hang on, i didn't come here for a science lesson you know! I know they can't give an exact number, i was only saying to the post before me......ah forget it, is doesn't matter, i'm going for a cuppa. :laugh:

Despite the construction of the Wikipedia article, most the evidence point to it being a comet. Still it wasn't any more destructive than a volcano or big earthquake, let alone a super-volcano.
