Well, in my home machine I have a 3Ghz dual core processor overclocked to 3.6Ghz and 4GB of RAM. I had always intended to upgrade to a quad core but I've never had the need, depends on your usage I suppose.
My current favourite word: Harsh!

It can cause problems if you push it too far or don't have sufficient cooling. I have the E8400 though which is usually quite good for overclocking and I actually ran it at 4Ghz for about a month without any issues. I put it back down to 3.6Ghz so that the timings would match 1:1 with the RAM and it's been like this for at least 18 months now, so I'd say that my processor is perfectly happy with it. Peoples results will vary though depending on the processor they are using and how cool they can keep it, each processor is also different so just because somebody else has an E8400 it doesn't necessarily mean that they could do the same overclock as me.

Let me try this time.. do you have any link handy which tells how to overclock the cpu? By the way it wont hurt my CPU right?

that's dependent on your cpu type, and generally OEM motherboards don't allow any such adjustments at all. The short generic form is below: In general open your bios settings and change increase the main bus speed. On core 2 and older Intel chips this is the Front Side Bus (FSB), on Nehalem and newer chips it's called Base Clock (BCLK). Off hand I don't recall what AMD calls it. In general increase it so that your total system speed (main bus speed * multipler) increases by 100 mhz at a time. Then boot into windows and run prime95 in stress testing mode while running a coretemp to monitor your CPU temperature. If you detect errors or your temp gets above 70C (80C if you're going for broke and are willing to accept the CPU only lasting a few years) reboot and drop your speed down again. If you get 30 minutes without error reboot and increase it until you're forced to back off. Once you find that point run prime 95 for at least 24 hours continuously with about 1/3rd of the time doing each of the 3 test types. If you have any errors drop your clock speed and restart the 24+ hour burnin test. IIRC with most intel CPUs you should be able to get ~20-25% this way. You can increase your max OC by increasing your CPU voltage a bit but this increases the heat released and isn't recommended with a stock cooler. Pushing your voltages too high is also the most common way to kill a CPU during OCing. At stock voltages the risk is minimal. Also boosting voltage runs into diminishing returns on a performance per watt scale very quickly.

As long as you don't mess with voltages and keep the temperature in the safe zone it's unlikely. Because the chip will run hotter you'll shorten its life a bit but at stock voltages you're talking about something like 10 years vs 8 or 9 which probably doesn't matter. Also if you're 24/7 and don't exceed the CPUs redline voltages the failure mode will mostly be the system becoming unstable until you back off the OC. However, if you're using watercooling and redlining everything like I do life expectancies are much less; I plan to replace my CPU + mobo every 18ish months and retire the old system to stock speed so I still have a backup that has good amounts of life left.
