Modifying other users comments in tips/tricks

Looks like you can change other users comments. When I hovered over the comments of my own 'tip/trick'[^] I noticed the edit and delete icons... so I clicked on edit icon and the edit window popped up. I added the text "123" to the end of the comment from
Marc Scheunerand to my surprise it worked. Perhaps you can also delete comments (didn't try). :doh: /M -

I just edited one of your comments, the one about double posting, and added some dots to the end. And on the screen, it shows no evidence i have been there. I think you get a notification via email to say someone modified your comment? not sure though....

Nope, no email notification, no special maker in my comments list (user profile page)... it's a perfect crime. :):wtf:

It was a feature, because we assumed that members of a certain rep level would not play silly buggers with others' comments and only edit / moderate those that required attention. I guess we were wrong. I'll remove the access and go back to doing it manually. What a waste.

I think it would be fine to leave it, but add who last modified the comment at the end e.g. Some comment.............by Frank (Last modified by: Bob) and if the originator has notification active, send them an email saying their comment was modified. (same as if you modify someones question in the QAs)

That would only work if such members were a really small minority - say 10 people, and you know each of these people well enough (how they behave in forums etc.). When the number of people with such editing rights gets bigger (say over 50) then it's safe to assume that there will be at least two or three of them who will act like retards. So in my opinion, it's a dangerous feature that you should either disable or restrict to a few hand picked members. [Or make it non-anonymous. So people can see that member-X edited comment-Y at a certain date-time]

I have used comment feature a lot but have rarely (or I guess never!) edited someone else comment. I think we should keep it, just in case if needed. As you thought of earlier, I too havn't noticed anyone playing around with someone else comments.

After 10 or more years with Code Project, you haven't learned your lesson yet? Some people just never learn. :rolleyes: Seriously, though, with a group as large as ours, we need some system to regulate the rebels. OH! Just thought of a feature. You should totally have a "Prison" link prominently displayed in the main menu. Anybody who keeps breaking the rules gets put into prison. They get added to the list of prisoners, where their username and crime are displayed for all to see, and they are unable to participate in the site. Repeat offenses get them tossed into prison for longer. And maybe prisoners get their own forum to bug eachother (you could call that page "Australia"). That's a half joke... it's probably not a good idea. Probably. :)
