I do dislike this wishy-washy, mealy-mouthed sentiment. Dawkins should say what he really thinks! :) I agree with him though, why should we stump up millions for a visit by a man who can well afford to pay for his own trip? If the people who believe in his fantasies wish him to come, maybe they could have a whip round. Personally I do not think this country should associate itself with a group that habitually sexually abuses children, then denies it does so, hides away and transfers those who have been discovered doing so rather than reporting them to the authorities, that has no regard for the mental well being of its female members, that acts to vicariously spread HIV and other STDs, that condemns homosexuality as a sin and yet is lead by men who do not have sex (except with children), (Odd, they say that sex with another man is against gods will and also say sex is a gift from god, yet not having sex is the truly unnatural thing to do!), and they have a chief executive who was sieg heiling the Fuhrer as a member of the Hitler Youth. He then insists on the mental corruption of millions by forcing scripture and dogma and cant down the throats of children before those children have a chance to grow wise enough to make a choice. He should be arrested for crimes against humanity.

In no way will I defend the Pope or agree with Dawkins [who I think is a twat], but this whole visit is getting beyond a joke. This morning, the square outside Westminster Cathedral was being washed down for the third time in a week using steam cleaners. He was not pleased  . The area bounded by Victoria - Pimlico - Millbank will be under police shut-down, I am not joking, from tomorrow. No entry or exit without positive photographic ID and proof of residence with a recent bill or bank statement. Yup I need to prove I live in the area to leave it; go figure. Parking has been suspended in the area for three days. So the entire area is not allowed out but now has nowhere to leave their cars. Mrs Wife IS a Catholic and she and FIL are going to the Vigil at Hide Park on Saturday. No drinks or food are allowed and they have to be there TWO HOURS before the service. I'm statying home with the girls and a nice bottle [or two] of wine.

They already have. Catholics raised funds for the visit because there was such a debate over whether or not it should be funded as a state or religious visit. The true cost of the visit would be far higher without this contribution.

I shall not downvote, but answer. His attitude to birth control and the protection of prophylactics condems millions to disease and poverty. If that is not a crime against humanity then it bloody well ought to be. The parents teach the children, true, but at the behest of the church, who insist on bible classes and confirmations, and, certainly in my experience, the priest visits the parents to make sure the children are pushed into these things. So yes, Parents, but at the insistance of this criminal organisation. I am glad the catholics are paying, but as an atheist, why am I paying? I do not want him here, I do not wish to pay, but sadly I cannot withhold my tax. Therefore money is being Stolen from the State to pay for the Godfather of the Religious Mafia. I can tar the entire church with this brush. It is too well spread. Apart from the priests that commit the crimes, there are others who collude, and yet more who cover up. There is misdirection and smear, and priests moved so as to keep the issue hidden. This is not a few bad apples, this is a high reaching and known act. They are complicit. Look at Belgium this week!

That somehow reminded me of a Father Ted quote: "We're not all like that. Say if there's two hundred million priests in the world, and 5% of them are pedophiles-- that's still only ten million!"

Dave - rape and subjugation of women is widespread. Does that mean that all men should be tarred with the same brush? Of course it doesn't. Does it mean that the Catholic Church shouldn't hang it's head in shame for the breach of trust that it is guilty of? Of course it doesn't. Does that mean that all priests are kiddy-fiddlers? Of course it doesn't. Try and bring the argument down to a none-hyperbolic level please.
