Last Sunday, I traded a CZ bolt-action rifle for a .22 AR platform. The new rifle is pretty much entirely polymer in its construction, and that's okay, because that makes it much lighter than my "real" AR. However, being all plastic and not a true gas-operated system, they took (understandable?) shortcuts in making the rifle look like an AR-15. One of these shortcuts is the single-piece lower receiver/buffer tube (on a real AR, the buffer tube threads onto the back of the receiver and provides a place on which to mount the stock). The problem with molded parts is that they can often times be somewhat out of spec. In this case, the buffer tube was just a little too small to keep the stock from rattling when installed on the rifle. You can, of course, purchase a better stock, but in my case, I saw no reason to throw $100 at this part of the rifle, so I "improvised". My solution was the judicious application of strips of aluminum tape. Aluminum tape is honest-to-god metal with an adhesive backing, and sold in rolls of 50-feet. I already had a roll of this tape left over from my adventures in water-cooling my computer from five years ago, so essentially, this was a no-cost upgrade. I merely applied some aluminum tape to the tube, and reinstalled the stock, and now, it's as tight as a high-dollar buttstock, but at absolutely no cost to me. In other firearms news, I ordered a new barrel and handguard parts for my homemade AR-15. These parts will allow me to complete the new upper receiver, and I can then concentrate on the lower receiver. Cost of parts so far - $485; anticipated cost of lower receiver $250-300. It looks like the new homemade AR will cost about $400 LESS than what I paid for my off-the-shelf Smith&Wesson AR.

(Something appropriate for knocking down an elk.) They have a really nice one with a composite stock, but don't give a price on their web site. (Read: expensive.) I expect I'll end up with a conventional wood stock instead; more within my budget.

I've been looking at a left-handed 7mm Mag Remmington rifle. (Something appropriate for knocking down an elk.) They have a really nice one with a composite stock, but don't give a price on their web site. (Read: expensive.) I expect I'll end up with a conventional wood stock instead; more within my budget.

Is that the Model 700? You can get a Laminate stock Model 700 "Boone & Crocket" (Remington part# 84054) for about $750. If you shop around, you can probably find a used one for less. If you're not set on a 7mm, you can get .308 (slightly bigger caliber) in more variations.

Yeah. Weird - the particular model I was looking at has either been removed from the site, or they at least changed the picture with it. It's something like the 700SPS, but it had a two-tone stock. That picture is gone, and the SPS now has a price. They must have changed something since the last time I checked.

What are the ballistic characterisctics of the .308 compared to 7mm? I favor the 7mm because of a) range, and b) I'm familiar with it, having shot one before.

(If we're talking 7mm magnum rather then 7mm-08... 0) .308 is better for larger game (like elk). 1) It's damn good out to about 800-1000 meters, depending on the load. 2) It's cheaper than 7mm. 3) It has slightly less recoil than 7mm magnum. 4) It's more plentiful than 7mm. BTW, 7mm-08 is a .308 necked down to 7mm, but the net result is a lower powered cartridge.

The 308 has more stopping power? 3 and 4) - The range requirement may trump some other considerations here. I have a feeling that given the lack of cover lower down, getting close will be tough. Even up here in the wooded heights, there's no undergrowth and I doubt it'll be easy to get within a couple hundred yards. It's completely different from what I grew up with in Vermont. There, heavy undergrowth and dense woods meant you rarely saw anything over 100 yards away, and you needed a round that was capable of plowing through the shrubbery without being deflected by a twig. But re recoil - the 7mm Mag I fired was a monster, no doubt about it.

Provoking the question, what kind of recoil pad was it wearing ? In pre-Internet-times I bought a Pachmayr pad which helped a lot. For shotguns with no issue of scope-eye-relief I see that there are actual shock-absorbers available. Just the other day my barber was remarking on how the Garand M-1 had such light recoil due to its semi-auto-mechanism buffering the shock. A simple bolt-action-rifle needs a pad, since if you unconsciously flinch then the intrinsic accuracy/range of your firearm makes no difference.
