the "farting in it's general direction" from Richard A.D post below; took me 3 seconds to remember the movie name. Although the last time i saw that movie was a good 5 years ago. But for the life of me, i can't remember the conference number i dial every day! is something wrong with me? :sigh:

No. It's muscle memory. Your fingers know what order to press the buttons in. Our old office had a burgular alarm - usual thing - type in a short number into a keypad, and close the door to set it. We moved out 7 years later (I probably set/unset the alarm most days), and the new occupant asked me what the alarm code was. I had no idea. I had to go back to the office, and enter the number, while he watched the keypad to see which buttons I pressed.

Yes, you seem to have activated your delay setting. In five years time you'll remember the conference number. Have you been talking to any women lately?

I can only get into online banking using a keyboard with a number pad because my fingers know the ID numbers and so on but I do not.

I was just about to post this exact example. A while back I realised this was dangerous and I tried to write down the numbers. Thankfully I'm left handed so I could write while pressing the keypad keys with my right hand. Unfortunately I discovered a flaw. My fingers are incapable of remembering the digits when they are being watched. With a bit of trial and error I got it, had it gone on any longer I'd have been getting out a camcorder and a tripod. -Rd

Why not type in notepad, so that you can see the result?

If I'm not getting it to type the numbers into a banking website, my hand get's all coy. It's a built in anti-phishing safe guard. Also, the camcorder would have been a more technically cool solution than notepad. Kind of like inventing a zero gravity pen instead of just using a pencil. -Rd

I learned how to finish a rubik's cube a few months ago, using a tutorial on the web based on small stories to remember the moves more easily. Now I have forgotten almost all stories, but I can still finish the rubik's cube. Muscle memories. This is also a good advantage for computer keypads vs. phone keypads, which are inverted. Otherwise, you would have to think "wait, am I on a phone or a computer, is the 1 key again on the top or on the bottom, ..".
